Just thinking about projects that were canned by their manufacturers which would have made fantastic retro cars! ^ Rover P8 which could possibly have had a 4.0 V8 under the lid! ^ Rover P9. Apparently was due to be badged an Alvis. How sad that it was never made! Pics courtesy of the most excellent www.austin-rover.co.uk ;D

Those doors on the P8 look a little Marina like? and that waistline upsweep smells like a Saab. Overall it looks pretty good though. The P9? I'm making space for it already, now I just need to invent a time machine to go back and get one.....

I've got a book at home which has got some photos of prototype mk1 escort fastbacks. Very 67 mustang inspired but they scrapped them because they thought it would damage capri sales. I'll have to scan them when i get home.

According to austin-rover.co.uk, the P9 was all set for production when it was axed by BL (AKA "The flying curse word" ;D) - there was a lot of bitterness about it. I must say, if I'd have worked on producing such a stunning car and some bunch of (polyester) suits came along and canned it, I'd pretty f*cked off too!
Rev - LOVE that Farm Imp!

There was mid engined Rover prototype as well, the Rover BS I think it was called. It's at the museum at Gaydon, along with a prototype Rover SD1 estate.....

... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

Pics courtesy of the most excellent www.austin-rover.co.uk ;D I've got an old MOTOR somewhere with drawings of that car (I think) on the cover - wasn't it intended to run a gas-turbine? I'll dig it out... THe drawings/pics show a white car, I seem to remember it looking a bit squarer than that but I'm not sure...

Surely, being rear-engined, the imp makes a pretty dire pick-up truck.
Looks cool though.

Just added something to my "Things to do before I die" list (in my head... I don't write it down... I'm not THAT sad! ) Build a Rover / Alvis P9 replica. This is of course when I have made my fortune and I have an enormous garage with a lean-to house on the side ;D.

Surely, being rear-engined, the imp makes a pretty dire pick-up truck. Looks cool though. Depends what you mean, you're right that it doesn't have an immense amount of space as the floor needs to be quite high, but I'm told that they were immensely good off road with little modification over a standard Imp saloon, could accomodate more weight (and higher/wider loads) than the Imp van, and were surprisingly dependable and reliable despite being an Imp working in hard conditions (Most Imps Imp can be reasonably dependable if you get them working right then keep them well maintained and don't neglect them) and they were capable of carrying half tonne loads, and were lighter than a number of utes so were harder to get bogged down on poor terrain, helped by being rear engined and rear drive so they had better traction than front engined and rear drive utes and even the Mini pickup apparently, even if that had more room. Although the Imp still had a 'boot' area for luggage under the bonnet, adding to it's carrying potential, no front engined pickup still has a separate boot area as well as its load bay.

:-XSorry, that P8 looks absolutely pants. I've printed off a pic to put on the mantlepiece to scare the kids away from the fire. No wonder BL went down the pan if thats what they were coming up with. The 2 seater looks good and I seem to remember was planned to run with a gas turbine.
