Ahhh, fuel consumption. Cue excited responses from those who get 90mpg out of a 300,000 miles 20 year old turdblowa. All I will tell you is this... From our Focus 1.8TD we get 47mpg, accurately calculated. I cannot understand how this is feasable, especially as Er Indoors rags the tits off it, and it's done 1bn miles. From my Astra 1.7DTi I get 36mpg. This is shameful, as I drive like an old biddy. Probably gets knackered up by sitting with the engine running/heater blowing while I eat my sandwiches & drink my weak lemon flavour drink. Hey, it's cold out there, kids. As for the other stuff, I don't even want to know. It terrifies me. The BMW "swingometer" will drop to 5mpg on full boot. And a super minx will struggle to top low-20's mpg despite being unable to crack 90mph....

This very true. I am basing my calculations on stuff from PC & the absolutely diabolical economy the owd Sceptre had (17mpg, at best. ERK!) rather than the £10 of LRP I wazzed into it a year ago...

5 miles commute? Cycle it! I can do 5 miles on the bicycle in 25 minutes, stopping once to be sick after a long uphill drag Yeah I did for a while. Uphill all the way back. But it's more fun flooring the van everywhere...!

2CV = 40-45mpg depending on the thrashing it gets. Once got 54mpg. I think the throttle must have been stuck shut that day. Merc seems to be averaging 27mpg and that's a diesel! Quite a big one though. Diesels are not always more economical though - at least where trucks are concerned. When I was driving US Trucks (Dodge Ram/Ford F150/Chevy Silverado) last year I found virtually no difference in fuel economy between the gas and diesel versions. Huuuuuge difference in torque and grin factor with the diesels though ;D

its cold, wet, heavy city traffic. I'd arrive wet and sweaty. People round here seem to go for cyclists as well. Kinda scary. People in suits on bikes look like tits and theres nowhere to change. And I like to drive my car.

I'm getting 45 - 50 mpg out of my Golf with a mix of general driving and the occasional nigel mansel moments.

I've just calculated I'm getting about 29mpg out of my 0.6L Cuore TR-XX, I wouldn't mind but I can't even drive it on boost at the moment. Feeble. Though I think the ECU is a bit confused at the moment.
On the other hand, the 1.6L Galant does about 35mpg. Evidently that extra litre, double weight and one less gear doesn't make the slightest difference. It's all about that aerodynamic "swallowtail" on the boot!

All this talk of double figures makes me sick, I get ~7mpg on shortish journeys in my truck Guess that's why I commute by motorbike (35mpg-ish) and the Mrs is using the LPG'd Merc (16mpg @49.9 ppl) until her bike's ready.... The BMW 525i that I had a while back (sold to Optimusprimer) seemed to do 25mpg round town which I was mightily impressed with!

£20 in the mondeo 1.8 is giving me approx 100 miles so about as economical as the v4 transit used to be Zetec engine? Ours did that, the consumption dropped off massively from 30-32mpg average (mixture of decent fast roads, and around town) to 20-22mpg. Just all the sensors start to fail, and the ECU slowly shuts down into limp home mode. I drove ours for a year in limphome because nobody could diagnose a fault with it! You could start by checking the hotwire airflow meter (between the airbox and the inlet, 4-pin plug in it) - take it off, look at the bit that hangs down into the airflow and spray carb cleaner on the copper wire across the middle until it's no longer black. That made a massive difference on ours for a few months, until something else went wrong.
