Cortina MPG now sitting at 17 MPG. Think I need another fiddle with it. Or at least get the Oldsmobile back on the road pronto! At least I can justify the crappy mileage in that...

That cannot be right. Plugs, points, leads, timing, fuel filters, pump, fuelling, lines, I'd have it all off and renew/replace/adjust.
Got any leaks anywhere? Checked the sump for a smell of petrol?

The uno is doing the same at the minute. Gonna have a good look round it today see if I can spot anything amiss.

I think the Herald dropped into the teens for a while once with the original 1147 lump. Its when I was using it for my 5 mile each way, almost all in slow moving traffic commute in the winter with full on choke starts etc.
What did you do when you last fiddled?

Yeah I've had 14mpg out of the Benz before - really cold weather and city driving in traffic.

You need to drive it harder then My old 220 stacklight used to drop down to 8 with some spirited driving ;D The 500se was much better on fuel than the carbed 220 ever was, don't think I ever saw the 4 pot above 20mpg..... but that may well have been down to driving style

its doing 5 miles each way commute in Nottingham traffic, its never going to hit 80 MPG yo VAG TDi sukkaZ.
It did at least do 23ish all round ebfore but not its getting wuuuurz.
Doing the same commute in my 425 big block Oldsmobile generally gave 11 - 12 MPG. and that was with a gammy trans and a slightly dragging brake.
Carb is a Weber 38DGAS with a K&N on it.
Last tinker I reset the timing, retarded it 2-3* as I was getting a smidge of pinking, and leaned it out a little and turned down the idle speed. Its autochoke. I suspect something there may be amiss, although its idling on choke a lot better than it was, but now the MPG is heading south...
Start again, first principals, its about service time anyway.
Checking for leaks is a good point.

It's a b*gger to start in the mornings but it always fires eventually! ;D

To be honest some of the MPG ratings banded about in general are hogwash My pals wife had a Golf TDi which did "56~60mpg" according to her - when we actually got her to measure it properly it actually only did 45mpg and she was royally pi$$ed off ;D One of my pals had a Cortina back in the 1990's and it did 15~20mpg according to him. I've driven some supposedly economical cars in recent years and also been woefully disappointed in the fuel economy: Hyundai Getz - 35mpg (supposedly about 50+mpg) Toyota Aygo - 55mpg (supposedly about 70mpg) Mazda 121 - 30~32mpg (supposedly 38~53mpg) My GF's mums old "US" spec Ford Escort 2.0L Auto got 37.5mpg on average just tootling around town I once took a Hyundai Coupe 2.7L V6 on a drive through Alberta and British Columbia - the majority of it at speeds beyond 100mph and averaged 44mpg - I have no idea how that was possible!!! It did 17.5mpg around town... Wasn't there something on Top Gear a few years back where "old dears" were running about in Metros that got about 16mpg?

my 106 diesel used to regurlarly get 69mpg
the civic was around 40 after sorting the relay out
406 does about 40-45, which is wibblepoo for a diesel, but I'm quite heavy footed with it as i like the turbo whine :-)

Drove some friends into central london the other week from basildon and then brought em back out again in the merc and it used 20 quids worth of juice, i reckon thats about 15mpg for that particular trip although we were late on the way in so i wasnt hanging about.

alaistair you need to lose the 38 and get a 2litre carb on there mate, the 38 will drink it as its probably still jetted for a 3 litre mate

I think its suppoesed to be properly jetted already. it was on when I got it. I do have another Weber twin off another 2.0 but no idea what ondition its in as its been in storage for years.
And yeah, my MPG is bang on. I top up, record the miles, drive, top up at same pump, record the miles and work it out from there. I'm sad enough to do it every tank as well.
My old 1600 crossflow Cortina only ran to 23-24 MPG at best so I don't expect any more from the 2.0 in a 1600 with the 1600 axle in place... To much revs.
I agree that a lot of people (especially drivers of moderns) believe they are getting a lot more to the gallon than they do.
