Yes, enough of the Daily Mail nonsense please. Just because we drive the same cars those moaning old codgers do doesn't mean we want to imitate their attitudes and fear of the 21st century too.
All this traveller/chav nonsense is just fear of the underclass our society created. Of course people with nothing commit more crimes. Less to loose, and much more to gain.
Here's some food for thought... Our economy relies on having about 1% unemployment to push up the price of labour. Without unemployment, everyone's wages would be a lot lower. Now do you think everyone ends up unemployed 1% of the time? Or that its more like the least employable 1% of society stays unemployed 100% of the time?
If you have a problem with fuel being nicked? Fit a locking cap, fit an anti-syphon tank out of a modern, and run a metal fuel line through the cabin. Car crime is nothing new. On the bright side.. if the contents of your fuel tank are worth more to a thief than the car itself, then they are less likely to try and nick the whole car. Petrol can be replaced, your pride and joy cant.

At which point they puncture the tank, get 5l into their can, and the rest just runs all over the street. Then the council try to charge you for the "environmental clean up"! ;D (Just in my experience, like). Sad fact is, you can only do so much. This type of curse word will always happen!

An undertray would do nicely for protecting the tank itself. Like all theft deterrents, they cant stop someone really determined to nick something, but they do make them decide to wait till an easier target comes along.
I have to admit, I havn't heard of this happening before.. and I live in Bradford.
In the end though, its the same solution as making sure your car doesn't get nicked. Locked garage.

There was a big article on the front of local paper that heating oil thefts have gone through the roof aswell.
So you run out of petrol freeze your nuts fixing the car then get home and find there's no heating.

*Devils advocate hat on* I wrote this on another forum I frequent just to stir up a bit of debate. Don't tear me to bits for it... Why should those of us who bother our arses to go out and work hard be made to subsidise those who don't? Removing long-term benefit claimants and pretty much anyone who phones up Claims Direct from our society can only be a good thing. Take your liberal hat off and think about it properly. No dole scum means our taxes would be used more effectively - more investment in the NHS for example. And less strain on it too, as there'd be less 14-year-old drunk pregnant teens who've just been stabbed by one of their boyfriends to look after. I know A&E on any weekend night would be a much more pleasant place to be without that. No dole scum means more houses available and less first-time buyers getting into crippling debt. Debt, of course, being something that will eventually cripple an economy... No dole scum means no adverts for claims direct, loan consolidation or happy hardcore mix CDs on the telly. No dole scum means you're less likely to be broken into, mugged, have your car keyed or your tank drained. No dole scum would benefit everyone. Hell, you could even use neds instead of foxes which would keep the animal rights folk at bay and probably keep the Countryside Alliance happy too. "This little gobshite was caught pinching red diesel and tools from Farmer John's barn, so let's tear him apart good and proper." I'd get dressed up in reds for that. *Removes Devil's advocate hat* Who would you regard me as "Dole Scum" then?. I've been unemployed since September. Claiming the dole (This time.) since November. Before then i was claiming for long enough to be put onto the "New Deal" programme. Does this make me "Scum" ?. My girlfriend has just lost her job in IT, and is now claiming the dole. I guess that would make her scum too?. I've tried to go self-employed to solve my problem of finding it hard to find an employer willing to employ me, But i can't raise the funds to do it "properly" and find it hard to find customers working from a 2up-2down in the middle of Gorton. I live in the center of a housing estate in a "underprivileged" area of Manchester. The majority of my neighbours are claiming some form of benefits. The majority of them are decent people, Contrary to popular belief they are infact not Monsters who spend their time drinking White lightning and slowly sucking the life and soul out of this country they are infact honest and decent people. Don't tarnish everyone with the same brush, Fair enough there may be a fair amount of people screwing the system. But in my experience, This is the minority not the majority. As for the housing comment, The house i rent is privately owned and a Shithole. It hasn't been modernised since the 70's and requires ALOT of work to bring it upto standard, But truth of the matter is its less than half the "Going rate" of most houses in this area. No one who could AFFORD to rent something more expensive than this (And being honest, most people can.) Would want to. If i was removed from this house, Chances are it would just be filled up with nigerian or polish immigrants 5 to a house, like the landlords other buildings of a similiar standard on this street. It most certainly would not help first-time buyers. Neither would removing any other "Doley Scum" from their houses, as most of them live in rented accomodation. As for the TV adverts and happy hardcore CD's, I've never phoned any of these companys - So maybe theres hope for me afterall? However i may consider a phonecall if i ever accidentally trip over your foot at a show. Atleast that way i could join the rest of my "brethren" in the compensation gang, Because you know your just not cool around here unless you have a compo claim or 12 mugged grannies under your belt. As for being broken into by "Doley scum" - The one time my house has ever been burgled (Or attempted.) was years ago when i was living at my parents, The perpetrator was quickly apprehended and was actually in full time employment at a local Garage, and had been for 3 years since he was 16. Shock headline there, Not all criminals are "Doley scum" - Some "Normals" can be criminals too. Oh, and before you ask - No, I've never stolen anything. Not even a candy bar from the local corner shop when i was a wee nipper. Infact, I have a sparkling clean criminal record. But hey, If any of the above makes myself or my girlfriend "Doley scum" - I'd rather be scum, Than a "holier than thou" self-important un-educated nobber. Suppose i should put on the flame retardent suit now eh for ticking all the boxes of unwanted poster?

I'd say "dole" and "scum" don't necessarily go hand in hand, being a professional type who spent a period of time unemployed living in a 1-bed flat on a big council estate.... Most of the scum around here have jobs! Have a spot to lighten the mood. ^^My little bro "did that" do that Chevette about eight years ago, sold it, it disappears for seven years then re-appears, looking exactly as it did when it left, in the road where I park every day. Bizarre!

I feel I also have to comment on Misteralz comments about 'dole-scum' If there isn't any benefits to claim do you think that everyone claiming is going to go out and get a job? I don't run my own business, but I'm guessing that your perception of a claiment doesn't possess the qualities I'd be looking for as an employer. And if they aren't getting any type of help from the government at all they're gonna have to radically step up their criminal activies to pay for food and shelter as well as their beer/drugs/burberry aren't they?

There are people who are scum who just claim benifits instead of working. But then there are the honest people who have lost their job and are still trying to get a new job. These people are on job seekers alouance which I don't mind. My mum was on it for a couple of month as she couldnt get a job (does going to the job centre every other day count as trying?) Ive got a part time job atm but for the past 4 months ive been trying to find a 'proper' job being a mechanic but no luck As for fuel lines what about getting some thick mesh sheet stuff bend it into a box shape attach it to the car with rubber mountings and electrifiy it Ryan.

*sigh* there's always one... Ok then, isle of wight, anywhere! Just so they can steal off each other instead of decent folk. My poor home city... It's quite nice really, especially when you get out of the city and into the surrounding countryside. Very classic-friendly place to live (affordable housing with garages etc.), and of course we have travellers/chavs etc. but where doesn't these days? That's my bit for promoting Hull then ;D

Before then I was claiming for long enough to be put onto the "New Deal" programme. Ahh, the New Deal. My brother was on this for 2 years whilst trying to set up a business after leaving college. To qualify for it you have to be on job seekers, and to be on job seekers, you can't work more than 17 hours (I think?) a week. So, my brother was essentially on a course to help him set up a business that at the same time demanded he didn't work enough hours to make enough money to invest in a business.... Oh, and Hull's a lovely city. Many a happy half-term week up there visiting my gran when I were a lad ;D
