Convert to LPG!
Theres a big problem with this is the trucking industry. You park up overnight in a wibblepoo layby because all the services are full and some git smashes the cap off the tank and nicks £400+ worth of diesel. Its happening everywhere. If you catch them in the act you get a good kicking too. One place I worked at had the whole diesel tanks removed from their fleet of 7.5 tonners one weekend. I guess fuel is like liquid cash to travellers.

I see a lot of this (because I do recovery and repair), plastic fuel lines cut and tank drained. It's usually the full length line that they cut, and it often costs more to replace that than the fuel was worth. don't see much filler cap and syphon trouble anymore due to the baffling and anti syphon valves that have been used for 20 odd years now. Progress? at least getting syphoned only cost you the fuel. A pair of fuel lines for a pug 307, for example, will cost about £120, and you cant join them safely due to the thin walled pipe and high pressure inside.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

My wife just came up with an idea...
Why not cage the fuel lines along the length of the car (kinda like you find on nissans...), wouldnt be hard to fit, but make life very awkward for thieves. Add on security for cars and vans is nowt new, armour lock kits for transits for example, why not protect your fuel too?

Most of the fuel in my motors is full of additives that do not get on with efi systems etc. I know someone who uses the stuff had some fuel borrowed and one of his neighbours cars suddenly had lots of engine faults and the cat failed..... I wonder why???

theres a truck bodyshop place near my work that regularly get the traveller treatment. big lorry fuel tanks will keep there shonky transits going for months so they love it. repair bills are huge for the company though.

Luckily they don't have to slash my lines. Just rock the car enough and it should come flying out of the knackered filler neck!
they're welcome to my fuel, its full of rust anyway.

Suffolk Constabulary couldn't give a toss, and Suffolk County Council and the local borough council won't let residents put up CCTV. I even know who it is that usually steals it, but it's hard to prove ownership of a liquid you can purchase anywhere. Of course most times the cops could fingerprint my car, but noooo, it's not the best use of resources. Unfortunately the plod's idea of cracking down on serious car crime is putting up more speed cameras.

A fake fuel tank filled with some nasty acid,as you know they will spill some on their hands ;D.I'm going to put my neck out here but i often wonder what it would be like to "rig" some boobie trapped cars. All you have to do is set up some car thats a)easy to steal b)has the engine removed and replaced with dynamite/cemtex.Once word gets about that cars are blowing up when hot wired watch the car crime drop ;D

i like how you all assume its chavs.a lot of lads i know, aparent nice young men in the comunity who apear to be anything but chavs and travellers steal fuel for the simple fact they cant offord to buy it.I'm not particulaly friends with them nor do i agreee with nicking petrol nor am i saying its not chavs who have stolen yours but just shows what the govenment is turning people to. and rigging cars will result in you getting done by the law.bloke in town kept havin his car broken into so he put two metal prongs in the back of his seat rigged to the house mains, few nights passed and then zzzzzzzzzaaaaaaaaaaapppppppp shocked smack head.law were involved and he got away with it but only just.

*Devils advocate hat on* I wrote this on another forum I frequent just to stir up a bit of debate. Don't tear me to bits for it...
Why should those of us who bother our arses to go out and work hard be made to subsidise those who don't? Removing long-term benefit claimants and pretty much anyone who phones up Claims Direct from our society can only be a good thing. Take your liberal hat off and think about it properly.
No dole scum means our taxes would be used more effectively - more investment in the NHS for example. And less strain on it too, as there'd be less 14-year-old drunk pregnant teens who've just been stabbed by one of their boyfriends to look after. I know A&E on any weekend night would be a much more pleasant place to be without that.
No dole scum means more houses available and less first-time buyers getting into crippling debt. Debt, of course, being something that will eventually cripple an economy...
No dole scum means no adverts for claims direct, loan consolidation or happy hardcore mix CDs on the telly.
No dole scum means you're less likely to be broken into, mugged, have your car keyed or your tank drained.
No dole scum would benefit everyone. Hell, you could even use neds instead of foxes which would keep the animal rights folk at bay and probably keep the Countryside Alliance happy too.
"This little gobshite was caught pinching red diesel and tools from Farmer John's barn, so let's tear him apart good and proper."
I'd get dressed up in reds for that.

Problem of labelling or blame is always in proof or lack thereof. Fact is, whoever does it needs to be taught a lesson. Another point on the sad slippery slope where everything is weighed heavily in favour of the 'bad guy'. I've now lost count of the number of 'average' people who are regularly asking why they are not allowed to defend themselves, their property and human rights - the law looks after the human rights of those who have no regard for others - but we're in a 'civilized' society - go figure!

This is all getting a bit 'Daily Mail' if you ask me. This petrol was almost definitely nicked by some immigrants who live in a 5-bed detached house with helipad (provided by the local council etc etc) and who do fundraising for Al-Qaieda, including bidding for lottery money, and sending it home to their families. Won't somebody think of the children! Society in meltdown.... house price crash just around the corner... war... famine... Diana is still alive... Yawn.

Sadly, there is no such thing as a juvenile delinquent*. The problem lies with the parents and their parents and so on. It is all cyclical.
Punishing those that commit crimes is very important as long as the punishment is seen as punishment - look at the way that ASBO's are used as points of pride these days, but we have to be careful that we do not go too far the other way. It needs to be used as a tool to teach a lesson rather than pay for the crime.
What needs to be done is some method of breaking the cycle and getting these people to realise that it is WRONG.
Right and Wrong are learned at our parents knee and no-one else has that responsibility.
* See Starship Troopers by Robert Heinlein for a fuller explanation.
