Okay, what to have as a first car? My dad has said that once the Locost is finished we could buy a small hatch to restore to mint / lightly modified condition to be my first car.
It has come down to these cars.

Polo. Mod far better. Just look sooo right with very little tweaking externally.
Of course you'd have to "G40"-it too!
Festier is just Retro Chav. (IN MY OPINION BEFORE I GET FLAMED!)

I'd be inclined to say the Fiesta, not entirely sure why, both are equally great little cars, but there's something I like about the Fiesta. There are a few other small old cars you could try (and I'm not just talking about the Imp, although that's always an option! ;D ;D ;D) for a start Chevettes are nice, and come in loads of engine sizes, some of which are insurable, as long as you don't go for an all out rally car straight away, and are also hatchbacks, as are Sunbeam Talbots if you could find one, and they come in affordable and insurable 930cc and 1600cc versions as well as the Lotus, which isn't as practical to run as a first car! Getting away from the hatchback thing there are classic Escorts, Minis, Imps, VWs, and I'm sure there are a lot more, all smallish cars availible with 2 doors and reasonably small engines, and you should be able to get cheapish classic insurance on all of the above I think, yet the little engines in all of them are either willing and responsive little engines, or can be tuned a bit to suit. And all will be great little fun cars to own. I say keep your options open, and don't snub anything yet. I could very nearly have been in the chav crowd when I was a little younger than yourself Locost, had a brush with Escorts and Astras in fact, I had been into classics for a while, and I liked Imps, VWs, Minis, and a lot of other stuff, but I was mainly into rallying in general, and like yourself I wanted a project for when I passed my test, I almost ended up with a mk3 Escort, which was offered to me on the cheap, at the time I had looked at Minis, Beetles, and a few modernish cars, and I was about to go for the Escort, until I spotted my first Imp lying in a lock up in Dunoon, the guys who raced it were desparately trying to get rid of it since they were in financial trouble, and after I had a look at it inside and out, and the ol' man had haggled it down to a reasonable price, I realised that Hillman Imps suited me down to the ground, there was just something about them, with the Escort my reaction had been "It's alright, what price is it?", same really with the Minis and VWs, which had been "It's quite nice, I suppose I like it", but the first time I looked at an Imp for sale it was "I F*CKING LOVE IMPS! THANKYOU PLEASE!" ;D ;D ;D ;D Or rather it would have been if Bo Selecta had been about when I were a nipper! ;D ;D ;D Sorry to go off at a tangent, but the point is keep your options open, when you see the car that's right for you you'll know it, don't limit yourself to one particular car then realise later that it doesn't suit you really. You'll never enjoy it as much as you could. Bloody hell that sounds a bit misty eyed and curse word, doesn't it? ;D ;D ;D ;D

polo polo polo polo unless you get a mk1 fester, it's gonna look halfords no matter how hard you try. where a polo, you can do the more-is-less thang... take off body moundings, steel wheels, single headlamp grille (if it's a mk2) then WHAM A TUNED G40 LUMP WITH FULL BLEND CHARGER, MASSIVE INTERCOOLER, WATER INJECTION, SEPERATE OIL FEED AND TWIN INDUCTION KITS. ahem. ultimate street sleeper. plus practical as fook, have you seen how much space you get in a 'breadvan' (i.e. not a coupe) polo with the seats down? did i mention the DEWEDGED THROTTLE BODY, TOOTHED 65MM PULLEYS AND 1400CC CONVERSION? Talking 170bhp with that lot... and they weigh around 700-800kg Hehe still regret selling the G40.... lot of fun and still stands out from the crowd. Pick up a regular mk3 for under 500 notes T&T from an old bird, have about 26 miles on the clock from her 6-monthly trip to Lidl. Plus... what year you looking? A fester will be welded to high heaven if it's more than 10 years old, a polo will fresh as a daisy. Mk2's (round headlights, pre-91) are better quality than mk3s (91>94, square lamps) as they're german-made not spanish. mk3 bodywork can start to rust on leading edges and trim holes. still not bad for a 13 year old car though, better than anything ol' henry kicks out

Oh and don't be fooled into thinking that Imps are dead common by the fact that this forum has thousands of Imp Club members on it! ;D ;D ;D ;D That's only because of the advertising I've been doing, and a few others have been doing, I stuck a link on the Imp Club's forum, that's why most of the Imp Club have visited us so far, the rest probably don't have the internet! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D When I first signed up to RR I think I was the only Imp owner on here! ;D ;D If you done the same thing on any other club forum you'd probably get the same result, but I've certainly seen a good deal more Fiestas and Polos on the road lately than Hillman Imps, or any kind of Rootes Chrysler for that matter.

Fiesta Mk1 every time - especially a SuperSport.
Polos have iffy brakes but otherwise OK in a sort of "Honey I shrunk the Golf" sort of way.

i voted polo cos they're a bit funkier than a fiesty, but id have to agree with rev9 and keep your options open. the factory i work in relocated, now i travel 25 miles instead of 10, so i started to look for a "me" type car that would do more than 20mpg.my first choice was a w123 diesel.but i bought a 68 vw 411 with a pair of 40s. fuel economy went straight out of the window cos i had to have it.and it costs me a bloody fortune to get to work. you should have a rough idea of what you want but still try to open minded. ;D that said i still cant decide what i want, so i buy them all.

I like them both, but I voted for Mk1 Fiesta. They're p*ss easy to work on, parts are cheap as chips, and they're in that kind of limbo right now of being between bangers and classics. The Polo has already achieved retro-cool status IMHO, but the Fezza is definitely up and coming. You never see Mk1's around now (I don't anyway) - but some granny is bound to have a 25k miler tucked away in her garage somewhere for you to find! ;D
