Firstly, hope everybody had a good x-mas and got everything they wanted and got totaly faced! ;D Ok, Escort mk1 and 2's. As some ppl may know I'm looking for a classical/retro car at the mo (own a mk2 Orion and Hyundai Steller (off road) ) This I'm making a list of all the cars i might think of getting as my first classic. Anybody here ever owned a mk1 or 2 Escort or know of any clubs/forums on the net that I could have a look at to find out some more? They seem pretty cool, look great, turn heads, pretty rapid even from the smaller lumps and have a lot to choose from plus are very practical with most mod-cons. So, anybody know anything about them or know of any clubs? Cheers!

You're liking a rwd escort? Well so is every other curse word on the planet - get ready to be coughing up some SERIOUS £££ for a good 'un.
Sweet handling, top rally pedigree and an a1 availability of tuning bits available, they've gotta be the archetypal "retro" car!
Have a chat with some of the MK1 & 2 owners on here (Ratters and Escortgeezer for example) as a starting point and go fro there!

Great cars, I haven't driven one for years (except on the kid's X box!) but they're great fun....even though they were the 'enemy' (the boy recer's choice) when I started driving. Very sought after now though.
Have you thought about a similar aged RWD car? Datsun Sunny/Cherry, Marina, Viva, Chevette etc.?

heh I know what you mean about "the enemy" - I used to hate them years ago!
Funny, I was having this conversation in the pub last night. I'm not as well informed as many but from what I can gather the Mk1/2 'scorts are quite crude in terms of suspension etc, and to get them to really handle properly you have to spend a fortune on bits to sort out the rear axle location and stuff. Many other cars from the same era are quite a bit more sophistcated, a lot cheaper and almost as tuneable. As RMad says, it might be worth investigating the alternatives? Funny, my brother wanted a Mk2 Escort to use for road rallying but was soon convinced of the advantages of a Lada - being a 60's Fiat design it was quite sophisticated for its day, the main shortcoming being that they are a bit heavier than the equivalent Escort. Food for thought?

If the cars used on the road & has sensible mods it will be fine usually, it's only if you want the ultimate or are running big power that this area lets you down really. The front is reasonably straight forward but if you go into the rear with turreting, 4/5/6 linking & stuff you are looking at ££££ plus other inconveniences like having no rear seat & the like. Parts supply is not a problem & you are spot on GJM....... ....but then I could be biased ;D Have a good look on www.turbosport.co.uk in the forum [old school section] - very good place to be. PS. You may have to register to view Another important factor is where you want to start with the ''project''. Have a good thought about this because although the price of good ones has/is rising if you start with a basket you will be throwing a lot more ££££ at the body than if you spent it at the beginning......

Yup rmad ive been looking at the Marina quite a bit, the coupe looks fairly tasty and still harbouring IMP'ish thourghts especialy towards the Sunbeam Stiletto. If i did get a mk1/2 scort i wouldnt be turning it into a fire breathing monster, perhaps an induction kit and tasteful zorst to release a few horses, mainly because I am still 17. I need to take a look at some other forums for mk1 2 owners but any idea what insurance will be like for a 1.3/lower end/Mexico scort? And on terms of prices Practical Classics say around £800 for a runner needing a bit of work. Think thats about right?

GJM, i picked up my eccy when i was 18, and i beasically went for one of the cheapest cc's to begin with, mine being a 1.3 on the log book (however close inspectioned revealed an engine change). Mine cost me £1000 but it's rock solid, rmad, wagoner and jabbo can confirm that. Mines not modded excessifly, its had a lil drop and running on RS 4 spokes, and now a new 3'' pipe on the back. Its not a rocket by any stretch of the imagination, and to be fair mate it doenst have to be! Looking cool is where its at, the cars different enough from those on the road today so power isnt a factor, untill at least i can insure an RS2000! Below if a picture of my lil beast (yes its a 4 door). Hope this sheds some light. Insurance for me was a over a grand but that was fully comprehensive and i'd only just passed.

Go on, you know you want an Imp! If you want something that's cheap, relatively easy to work on and easy to get bits for start with a reasonable condition Imp saloon, although even a coupe should be reasonably affordable, they're quite easy to work on in a lot of respects, there is plenty of room in the engine bay for a number of jobs, and it's very easy to get the engine out of an Imp, you could have it out, work on it, and stick it back in there in an afternoon if you were doing a relatively minor job and had all the gear you need, plus the club support is good and you can get an unbelievable amount of spares either from the club or specialists like Malcolm Anderson, Impspeed, Corley Conversions and the like. Of course I dare say a similar thing applies to the Escort, and for that matter the Mini and a number of VWs, at the end of the day whatever of those suits you best personally is the best thing to go for, they all appeal to different people in different ways, the good thing about classic cars is that there is no one perfect car for everyone, everyone has their own preferences and opinions and that makes it all the more interesting!

Aahhh, Mk1 Escort..... the first car I had on the road! £180, back in '87 I had another one about 3 years ago. It was a 1968 2-door 1300 that had been off the road for about a year. Paid £375 if I remember right.... needed sills, floor & inner wing work... the usual!! Sold it again when I bought the Sceptre. If you do look at an Escort then check the front inner wings/bulkhead VERY carefuly..... most will have been repaired/bodged by now.... in general, with any old car the rust you see is just the tip of the iceberg. If you want a project, and the price is right, fine. But if you get it home and it turns out to be a project.... All the 'little' jobs add up. Don't let your heart rule your head....... 'The voice of experience' ...... and still making mistakes!
|
|
... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

frookin'ell, on the turbo'sport forums (ford) they reckon £1200 for a half decent runner with tax and mot needing work! Thats ever so slightly getting out of my price range for a car needing work. I want something with tax and mot with a good condition lump with work needed on the body and little bits and bobs for under £800. Another pro for the Imps then there cheap as chips to buy, even the stilettos and californians can be gotten hold of for under £1000 (from what i've heard and seen anywho)

Best be blagging yerself a Shove-it then! ;D For £1000 the world really is your oyster with one of those..... ...here's a couple from opposite ends of the shovel-o-curse word spectrum! < from £50! < from £500! (Oh and if anyone is asking the seller q's about the green one - you might like to remind him that he owes me £26!!!)
