Ok my AA renewal has dropped through the door again, and when i mean again i mean the 4th one this year.Less than 6 months into my policy i'm getting letters telling me to renew.I had a big yellow letter yesterday and a small letter today FFS!.Since the AA was taken over by some American group or whatever their standards have dropped. The Question is wheter the RAC or Green flag or someother company is better.
Does anyone have any ideas or experiances of other firms or should i just stick with the AA?

I think Green Slag don't cover cars older than 10 years old. The AA have always been fine for me, didn't know they had been taken over though.

I have been happy with Britania (sp?)
Had to call them 3 times and all times have been fairly quick and the recovery guys very proffesional/helpful.
Used to get annoyed with RAC/AA that they would insist on sending a patrol out before sending recovery despite me assuring them that faults such as a broken half shaft or utterly seized engine would unlikely to be fixed by the roadside...

Have just cancelled by AA cover as all my cars are now covered by my insurance (inc European breakdown, home call-outs etc).
As mentioned, some companies do not cover "old bangers" which is an issue for many of us!

Left the AA for the RAC last year when I went abroad, as they would cover my '89 Volvo for EU wide use. £221 for the year?
Anyway, added my latest vehicle and they couldn't find any of my details so had to take another policy out. On the two call outs I've had since, I've been messed about both times. So I'd stick with the AA, or go with an insurance company provided service. I used one through HIC for a couple of years, including abroad and it seemed very good.
52ltrs of Kerosene + 1982 Mk2 Transit +central France + HIC recovery + 80 euros to the local Ford dealer = sorted ;D

if youre using the cover on your insurance, make sure its roadside AND recovery, most are only roadside.
i usually alternate between AA and RAC, one year with each, then when the renewal price is more than the introductory offer, see what the other will offer to poach my custom back. id say RAC are actually marginally better than AA in terms of service, and time taken to attend.

Ours is recovery - used it when the windscreen went BANG in the H van while we were flying along a German autoroute. Quite stressful and expensive (UK mobile, get charged even if they call you back) but better than nowt.

TBH i have'nt had to use them this year but last year i had to call them out to the range rover and the bloke could'nt sort a miss fire out cos it was'nt in the laptop he had on his van.But the year prior to that i had a bloke come out in leicster to look at my mini cos i had aflat battery and he found out that the warning light on the dash board was't wired in and kick starting the alternator. So he rewired my dashlights for me,turns out he's into mk1 fiestas. He also told me how they love it when they get called out to old motors as its more of a challenge than towing mundanos and vectras to the nearest dealer.i think i will reluctantly stick with the AA this year and see if they get better. As for the takeover they were bought out a few years ago and the company that got them sent everyone a cheque for £200 as a thank you.

Been with the AA well over 20 yrs now, never really a problem with them but when Madge's clutch went on way back from Wales I went for the FJ Breakdown cover which is part of the insurance. Really quick response and sent recovery vehicle on my say so rather than a repair van. Overall they were excellant.

I get relay cover for £28 on top of my insurance. I *think* it's only for that car but I've used it twice and they have been really good both times. I was with AA before and the only difference was they are more expensive. I don't think I need cover on other cars because it's only mine that breaks down hideously

if youre using the cover on your insurance, make sure its roadside AND recovery, most are only roadside. Aye, Found that one out the hard way. Knackered inner CV joint, M11, Sunday evening 80 miles from home. Oh how we laughed when the guy who turned up said he could only tow me 10 miles. Happy with my AA cover, even though last time I had to call 'em out the patrol only held a torch while I put my own carb back together.

I'm with the AA now, used them once, athough that was on Bodie and Doyles membership!
Was impressed, they came quickly, fixed the car and charged me less for the belt they had to fit than they cost from a motor factors!!

I'd never use Green Flag again. long story p1$$ take service. 0/10 AA seemed pretty good last time i needed em a few years back.

I ditched being with Britannia as I found the quality of service was too dependent on the local agent. Despite being located only two miles from my house the bloke was completely unobtainable (apparently it often happened) and the nearest one was halfway across Norfolk.
I’m now with AA as there won’t be issues about age of car etc and they did a decent deal when I got car insurance through them as well.

I'm with RAC and my sister is with AA. Recently neither of us has had a callout so cant really comment if things have changed but a while back we both ran ropey old cars and had several callouts each. Service was ok from both I suppose. Sometimes it would be a dedicated van, sometimes a contractor. TBH, it all depended on the guy at the scene. Some just arent too helpfull and will tow you or call for a recovery truck after a quick glance at the car, yet some are happy to spend a fair bit of time tinkering at the roadside to see if they can get it going again. The older guys seem to be more helpfull in my experience. The younger guys just want to plug their ubercomputer into the engine and hope its a simple sensor swap. They get a little confused with points and condensors and stuff!
iirc we only have a few quid difference in price between us for basically the same thing - roadside and recovery.

Ive got breakdown insurance with www.autoaidbreakdown.co.uk. Costs £36 a year and when you break down you give them a call and they send a local recovery garage out to you. You can ring up a garage you know if you like. You have the car repaired/recovered, pay them andsend the receipt to autoaid and they send you the money in full. Used them once, great service and coughed up straight away. The breakdown people get out to you really quickly as they ring the garage who is closest to you so you don't have to wait for a patrol to become available or wait because theres some pregnat woman broken down on the motorway they have to deal with first. No more 4 hour waits and they cover any car, no age restrictions! Reccomended.

I have recently read somewhere of a German firm that covers all of europe, they use Green Flag over here, but are cheaper. If you are planning a trip to the ring and breakdown they'll bring you all the way back to blighty too. can't fuggin remember where I read tho... ADAC?

I found out that the AA only let you have six call-outs a year. On Roadside tariff at least. I used them all when I had a succession of snotters a couple of years back ;D

most places do that. a "fair usage policy" RAC are the same, after 6 in a year, it then costs about £75 per callout iirc.
