and here's some shonky rewelded Astra goodness and, not disbelieving you, but how does it drive with no clutch cover, or have they sorted that? don't know - i havent seen it driving - only in the vid notice how the astra is better all round - wiser cut points and cleaner welding - done by a professional - rather than the muppet himself the astra vids were shot in the yard across from scaryoldcortina as the man in the vid says - he's Mad.............cuckoo

this guy really is a first class tool aint he. the ideas beyond stupid, but fair enough if someone wants to do it for a laugh. but to try to justify it as a planet-saving design, ile have some of what hes smoking!! the execution is terrible too, does it not could as a cut and shut if you cut it the other way? the only reason I can see for doing it is if he only has an alleyway down the side of his house and not a driveway...... instead of buying a moped he can have a car with a roof to keep, him dry, and theres still enough seats for all his mates

I have seen it "drive", my how we laughed... About the only benefit of the metro is that it fits in the back of a merc sprinter, thats how he moves it around.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

thats the thing I love about this forum, not only do we have a bunch of people who know about the car, people who have photos of it, people who have seen the real thing but even people who have worked on it Nowhere else. Fantastic. Get it to the retro rides 08 meet!

This trick was done years ago to a Beetle, I remember a picture of it front on and it was a lot skinnier than this chaps 'creations' whilst still being driveable. ;D I'm off to try and find some pics for the evidence m'lud!

Still makes me laugh. "Will cut congestion!" yeah? How? It's still the same length! You need to think outside the box. t's got no clutch so you can only drive it on the open road by rolling it downhill and ramming it into second gear. This has two effects: i) as soon as you have to stop it stalls = zero emissions. ii) the Mini-derived gearbox will withstand that abuse for about half an hour. No drive, no point starting it = zero emissions. If everyone had one there would be no congestion in towns and cities or on motorways because none of us could get to the towns or cities to cause congestion. Simple!

I remember that too. american I think and didn't it have standard width axles? Pretty sure it's the same vw I'm thinking of as well. Might well have been red and named "Thinbug", was very well finished etc. It's in one of the Colin Burnham VW books I've got somewhere.

Doh! and thanks - I should've realised that, I've driven with no clutch enough times Looking at the end of the vid again, it does have a compete clutch on there, and even something going across although it doesn't look central enough to be the release mechanism...

Oh dear. ;D Sad waste of a mkIII Astra really, those are good cars when some fool hasn't had half of them removed. It has novelty value I'll give it that, same with his earlier Metro catastrophe and that Beetle, but I can't help thinking that there are better ways to modify an Astra or Metro than loosing half the width and all the practicality and mechanical reliability. The Beetle's different because there's other stuff going on there clearly.
