Personally I detest off topic forums. If you want to talk about politics or music or games or whatever other stuff, go to a politics/music/games site and do it. However other people seem to have other opinions. So I'm investigating what the forum thinks. Please note this is not a democracy ,.. just gathering opinions.

i'm not totaly agaist an off topic forum but but i don't think this site needs one as there are plenty about and most people use more than one site for forums. that said more catagories could be a good idea as it would stop at least help stop post being lost ie:tech ,general, pics ect,, just a thought

Not keen on seperate catagories. I like the way it is at the moment.
Maybe the idea of an off topic smiley would work.

i also like it as is. everything lumped together may seem confusing but so does splitting it up. in other forums i've seen how some posts could happily exist in several different sections at once - it can be hard to differenciate soemtimes i say take from each post what you want. you have to read everything, but then you don't miss anything! we already have several sections (for sale, galleries etc). i think its fine. I'm not in favour of an off-topic board. I just don't think it would work very well here.... I'm agreed that an "off-topic" smilie would be good... (Or a "shut-up-Rev" one... ;D ;D ;D). On other sites it almost seems like the off-topic board is there because moderators can't be arsed to moderate the main board. I reckons it's OK as is at the moment. Sometimes it's fun to wander off down a little blind alley - it's like living dangerously knowing you might be slapped down at any minute... If there's something non-car related you wanna chat with another member about, be it the weather, eBay, fashion, music etc, etc, the I suggest we all make sure we got a messenger account or similar... I talk with quite a few of you guys on messenger about non-car stuff, and that seems to work pretty well, certainly for me... So there, that's my ten-pence-worth.

If the forum was inundated with posts about weather / music / britney spears' panties, then I would say yeah, go for it. As it isn't, and we're all well and truly certifiable when it comes to our obsession with retro motors (so much so that its 99.9% all that we talk about! ;D), I don't think we need one.

I'm agreed that an "off-topic" smilie would be good... (Or a "shut-up-Rev" one... ;D ;D ;D). Here here, that's a great idea! ;D ;D ;D ;D I'll try to keep to the subject, as long as you lot stop distracting me! ;D ;D ;D Nah, don't split it up into different categories, or put in new ones, I've seen sites like that and this one works better without a doubt, I like RR the way it is!

I'm with HotWire on this one: if I want to talk about the JTQ or Corduroy for example, I'll go to an acid jazz site. If I want to talk politics, I'll also go elsewhere...

I reckon this forum is working OK at the moment (but i am new). As far as topics that are not related to retro rides, I think they are good. It helps to form a picture of other members reading their input to various subjects, so I think they should stay in the "general" section. It becomes a bit one dimensional if all that is discussed is the car side of life. If everybody keeps personal abuse out of it, I can't see why "full and frank conversations" can't be the go. (thanks to Sir Humphrey for the quote)

I do like it the way it is, but for people who don't come on every day it can take ages to go through 6 or 7 pages of threads. maybe an off topic is not such a bad idea.
The main problem with this forum is that it takes up to a minute and a half for threads to come up, and picture post threads I must forget as they can take 10 minutes or more to load. The advertisements load quick, but it takes me about 2 hours to go through everything which is why I don't come on as often as I would like. Part of the problem is that I run a 233Mhz processor and a 28k modem, but other forums load heaps faster, vbulletin is tha fastest of all.

Okay some good points in here,..
Lets try this,.. if its a technical thing stick "Tech :" in front of the title,.. if there are going to be lots of pictures then say so at the end of the title ie "(56k beware)" or "(slow load)" ,.. or some similar such thing.
I'm going to write my own forum code eventually, I just need to change my web host so my bandwidth costs are not huge!

Sorry to drag this up from the depths of page 3 but I only just saw it...
Just to give my 2p, I'm a super-moderator on one of Europes largest tech sites. Nearly 17,000 members and growing daily.
Having a General Discussion forum seems essential to building a good community and, judging by my past experiences online (since '96), those communities that have had a place where people have been able to post about their day, their kids birthday, anything that takes their fancy (obviously within limits) have been the strongest communities. It does require good moderation though.
There is a good community here but it may be a good idea to explore a general discussion forum for a short while to trial how it is received and used, it is nice to get to know people a little more than via their cars.
