You've got to look at them in the context of the era. He pushed the hot rod / custom car show scene right to its limits!

One of my all time heroes.
He did not do normal, because it had been done before.

Ed Roth started out building and painting hot rods, customs and choppers in the 50s. However he rapidly became disallusioned. He believed that a custom car should be a true one-off, not a cosmetically butchered production car. So he started making his own fibreglass body creations, (carving the original out of plaster and then using that as a buck to make a mould from) Initially these were based on modified versions of traditional hot rod chassis but later he was building the chassis from scratch too. His first few creations wer met with rapturous adulation - and are fine rods/customs/whatever they are! He did a showpiece car per year. However when he built the Orbitron in '64 reception was a little luke warm to the somewhat OTT car. Roth carried on expressing his creativity and the cars became more sculpture than transport, with some of them being completely undrivable. He was working with pioneer cartoonist and graphic artist and mad hot rodder Rob Williams (later prosecuted for obscentity for his underground "adult" comics) and as this was the 60s you have to assume there was a fair amount of psychadelic inspiration following the beatnik phase... Also as Roth moved on to 2, 3, 5 and no wheeled creations the traditional rod & custom scene shunned him a bit, the shows wouldn't take his vehicles and the bikers were also not so interested in the trike and such style stuff he was doing. In the early 70s he closed down Roth Studios and became a nomadic biker out in the desert (alledgedly becoming a Hells Angels prospect and being involved in the drug trade).
After the disappointing reception of Orbitron it was sold off. It spent a long time in a private collection in Texas before being traded for another car. The new owner got involved in some drug trouble and gave the Orbitron to his lawyer in lieu of paying his fees. The lawyer sold the car to a dude down in Mexico and he in turn sold it to a carnival owner who used it as a kind of clown car in his show until he also was caught up in a drug deal gone bad and killed. The car then passed to one of his relatives who owns the "sex shop and videos" place where it was used as a kind of rolling trash can for 15 years or more before being discovered and is now in the hands of a guy who does $$$$$$$$$$$ restorations for Mexicos rich and funky.

Love the way the Orbitron, and that yellow one in Seth's first post have some assymetric styling cues.

Absolutely correct Seth. Mini engine and some mini running gear.
I may be getting confused with another of his cars but I also seem to remember that the Betnik Bandit (foreground in the pic) used some Morris Minor parts in the steering.

Love the way the Orbitron, and that yellow one in Seth's first post have some assymetric styling cues. Asymetric was kinda "in" for a while. I dunno if Roth pioneered it but I've seen period pics of rods, sleds and boulevard customs with asyemtric custom work on them.
