The reason you change the fuel filter is because the svo flushes deposits out from the tank. Usually this happens just the once after about 1000miles depending on the condition of the filter already. On some makes you can fit a small inline filter on jubilee clips before the main filter to catch the crud, then either bin or clean them.
I'm planning going the SVO route too soon.
On the subject of water in WVO, there are some schools of thought that suggest a little water in the oil isn't a bad thing, it works like water injection if you are upping the boost on a TD, it helps keep the exhaust gas temp a little lower. Don't know if it is true, just what I read.

oooh cool conflicting reports though - elsewhere it seems to say that the xud's could have had either a lucas or bosch pump. Is there an easy way of telling the difference? from here: www.biomotors.co.uk/CarsVansN.html

the pumps should say on them but as i said before there are many myths about running on veg oil so its really up to the individual if they have good enough reasons or worth there while in going down that route

the best way for any pump is to get the fuel temp up as high as possible you should not run any car on svo without a pre heater the osch pumps start ok from cold and are stronger but starting from cold on svo will damage your engine it does not burn 100percent and cokes the engine up if its heated to over 70degrees it is as thin as regular derv and runs the same

Tim, the fuel pump will probably have Bosch written on it, the one on my 98 Xantia 1.9TD has. I thought I might have had a Lucas pump as the rubber hand pump bulb was Lucas, but having referred to a Haynes guide I had lying around for the 405TD I managed to ID my pump as Bosch, and then saw the name on it anyway!

I've scanned the pics in that show the two types of pump, hopefully this'll be clear enough to help you id yours.

I run my Xantia TD (L reg) on veg oil that i filter myself, car has no modifications and has yet to have any problems in 6k with 142k on the clock. Get the oil for free from a friend who's a chef and i filter it through denim in the garage! Cuts the cost of the daily commute massively! Makes me want fish and chips every time i go anywhere though

Anyone using a bit of waste engine oil in with their diesel/veg oil mix?

^^^ Was wondering that. Diesels will run on engine oil - as rather too many owners of 3.0 Isuzus or Dci Renaults know!

My photobucket account seems to be down, not sure why at the moment.
I wouldn't use waste engine oil in your fuel tank as it apparently contains various acids and other nasties. Running veg oil you shouldn't need to add oil as a lubricant, but if you do want to I'd use new stuff. If you are naughty and run your car on heating oil then you need to add motor oil to lubricate the pump, but this is very illegal and would get you into big trouble with the man.

if you have a lucas pump you need a heat exchanger to warm the oil up there are many out there this is the one I have fitted to mine cgi.ebay.co.uk/VOW2C-Veg-oil-Bio-diesel-Fuel-Heater-Heat-Exchanger_W0QQitemZ170181774962QQihZ007QQcategoryZ9895QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItemI run on (SVO) & have done for over 12 months with out any issues I use pura oil from tesscos at 56P per ltr this heat exchanger is the duel one so it has a heater plug for cold starting & I have this on a switch so when the hot water is up to temp I turn it off although this uint has a thermo switch on it I have also fitted this unit close to the diesel pump so the oil is hotter going into the pump on cold starting off the heater plug first thing in the morning this unit is fitted to my tata loadbeta 4 x 4 double cab v reg year 2000 as I run my own small business I was looking for a basic & simple duel purpose vehicle & a allrounder cheap & this fit the bill just fine I do approx 30-40 k per year including towing a car trailer & fuel is my biggest overhead & by running on veg oil my profit is greater & running costs lower ;D this leaves my more £££££££ to play with my toys so it works for me you can go 50/50 but should be looking at 70/30 mix but for real savings you need to be 100% (SVO) I am looking at 100% (WVO) now working on a filter system for the used oil I have a supplier that I can have there used oil FREE so free fuel is next for me I hope this info will help out a little but there are alot of myths about the use of veg oil not true about lucas pumps they don't need heater on my 2.5 transit as one on its been on veg oil for a year so it may not sound alot to people but thats 100,000 miles in this house how ever all pumps are diffent heres the best place to find out about bio or veg fuel hope it help www.vegetableoildiesel.co.uk/
