I have to say muchos gracias to Benzboy and Pillock who dropped by yesterday to particpate in the chaos which is a mechanical project here... Plan was to refit the trans into the Oldsmobile. Much deep thought required before hand The Benz. And another R-R car sits on my drive.... Kevfromwales' Hillman was there not a week before. Many cool cars. The trans itself. Initial enthusiasm.... and not a small amount of split trans fluid. How much ATF can you get in a torque converter? bit more standing around. considering. planning. shift yet more slot mags out the way so we can get up the side of the car And have a cup of coffee Big block Olds. Now where do all these little bits go? As we have no npbbet prop on the car I use a bit of re-enforcing rod to prop it open. Ever the safety man Pillock suggested adding a couple of cable ties. Safe as houses. Those Jacks look really weedy under that car.... Even thought hey were only used to jack the trans not the car itself.... Ever had a trolley jack fail on you? I have. Funkin scary. Benzboy in some form of purplehaze or something, and back in reality "to me, to you" Pillock gives his seal of safety approval to the use of wooden stuff wedged under the car soaked in ATF. but finally, after Benzboy appeared with a length or railway sleeper (seriously) out of the boot of his car we were able to use three trolley jacks, two bottle jacks, a scissor jack and sundry bits of wood to pursuade the trans back into position. These funkers weigh in at 175 lbs without the torque converter. Heavy metal indeed. And yeah, after we had to push that sodding Buick up the drive to move it the first time it started and ran fine when it was time to put everything away.... Meh. Just got to put the last of the bellhousing bolts in, nip everything up, rebilt the torque converter to the flex plate, connect up exhausts and coolers and all that and then we can see if it actually drives now.... anyone taking bets?

I recognise at least one pair of those slot mags. The answer to the question "How much ATF can you get in a torque converter?" is - loads. And if you think ATF stinks try friction modifier, which is what my garage and entire house currently smell of. Are you firing it up tomorrow? I might pop round to lend some moral support (and have a cup of tea).

Bench? floor...
I thougth that it was gonig to be a work of hercules to get that back in withlimited clearance workign from underneath like that but after a certain amount of sizing it up it all seemed to go pretty much to plan.
We did have some ace innovations like trying the torque converter on with gardening twine (I'm sure that the GM facroty tool is exactly the same, right?)
Until its moving about under its own propulsion I don't plan on cracking any beverages in celebration. Those TC seals are notroiously easy to damage/push out and I do recall when we took it out we dropped the converter itself...
We shall see.
Jst got to find the time to finish it off now.

Lee, not firing it up tomorrow. Need to refill and let it sit 24 hours I guess as its been a few weeks since the seals were soaked and fitted so they'll want to see some more fluid and soak again a bit. You're welcome for a cuppa. Not sure if we are going shopping part of the day but I'll see if I can get out of that as I've had man flu all day today. Give me a call or text.
And yeah, thay could well be those slots. Appliance?

It went pretty seamlessly didn't it? It was a good lark, I like doing stuff like this (particularly if a garage is involved!) I'll pick up my overalls at some point... they're ripped to b*ggery but they match my car ;D ;D

What size motor is the BB in the olds AK, is it a 403? 425 "Super Rocket" 7 litre 375 BHP and 485 lbs torque. The bumpers are where you are supposed to jack & support them. Says so in the manual. The frame horns on those are HEAVY DUTY steel section!

Alistair had the car supported on his back and I leaned in and took the trans out under my arm. Simple. 3 hours supping tea and 25 seconds to do the job. Honest Hehe great to meet you - and the Benz! Still think there's some heavy-duty David Blaine going on with that arch clearance though
