Thought I'd come to the group who would know whats up with the missus Escort. Its a J plate MKv auto 1.6 CVH ( no red key either ). Suddenly the other morning it won't start ( but lights and everything else work ) and we're getting a ticktock sound from the drivers footwell for about 20seconds when the ignition is switched on. The immobiliser lite also stays on and from what I can gather the pats has kicked in Anyone come across this before ? If so any help is muchly apreciated, like how to disable/remove the pats and get it running again etc. Cheers in advance J & K

First thing I would check is battery conections are clean/tight and the same with any earth leads (battery to body and engine to body, also check the conections to the starter motor. Has it been starting OK or was it sluggish turning over? If it was get the battery checked out or try a jump start, if it starts then I would say battery. The 'ticktock' noise sounds like a relay, try removing them in turn to isolate which one is making the noise. I belive Escorts around that year sufered from fusebox problems, might be another thing to look at.

... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

That clicking sound could also be the starter solenoid. If it's an immobiliser problem then I don't have the foggiest!

Yeah, could well be. I've found that a low battery can give all sorts of 'false' electrical problems, which lead to much head scratching....

Thanks for the replies, I'm going to start with the relay thats 'switching' in the drivers foot well and go from there. Also I think I'll give the haynes manual a go and try and reset the immob if its possible !. As I'm pretty sure thats the problem, would be nice if anyone else has had the same or similar fault to bash out ideas with though ;D
