I used to love street machine.. my room was decorated wall to wall with the centre pages, and I used to love the model section as well.. spent hours trying to replicate the effects others were getting on their models with the models I could buy from my local model shop..
I really don't know what happened to all my issues- I boxed them all up when I was still living at home.. and I don't know if they came with me or stayed with my parents.. or even if they're still in the loft somewhere

Good point. Motorvation and small talk were the best. When I started reading SM regularly in about '96 - I would have been 14 at the time - drawing pictures and making models were as close as I could get to the real thing! ;D

Terry Ross, the bloke behind Small Talk is also the one behind the Speedfreaks models to be found in Argos and Halfords amongst others. He's one talented model maker.

The reality is though, is that I think it does have a replacement and you're reading it right now! Retro-Rides is made up of the small communities that used to buy all the best magazines (Jalopy, Retro Cars, SM), sadly I don't think that we're enough to sustain any of them again. We're like jazz - all the coolest musicians listen to it...but the charts are still full of Girls Aloud and Robbie Williams! I agree with you there Mr Rmad. This forum is the closest thing we all have to SM that covers all aspects. Forums are now magazines in a lot of ways. Jazz - I immediatley think of Howard Moon from The Mighty Boosh

I bought my first copy in about 1983 when I was about 12. I gave it up in the early 90s when I went through a wierd classic car phase, then picked it up about a year or two before it died.
CC always seemed a bit pretentious to me. Especially when Keith Seume was editor. It was more like "Formulaic cal-look dub monthly".

Think I picked it up in the late '80s, Clive Househam was building a black KG. Always thought then it was miles better than CC. Loved Small Talk and Steve Kirks drawings, I remember they used to sponsed the big shows etc. Then came project DMC and a few iffy editors and it really went downhill.
Shame as CC needs the competition to keep it on its toes.

The first issue I ever had featured tom radfords rover -loved that mag it also inspired to build my fiat after they did a feature on a 126 roadster called "plopper". ;D I still have the mag and the picture I made of how I wanted my car to look like over 17 years ago!!! and still have all of them in the loft along with tons of other magazines.. if I get in the loft I'm there for hours!!!!!

Just a thought, EMAP still own the Street Machine title, and I read on here that they were considering reviving the name and aiming it at the hot hatch brigade. Perhaps if someone had a word in their ear, it could be relaunched as a replacement for Retro Cars. 'Our' type of cars are starting to catch on. I'm seeing the odd Mk2 Golf, and other 70's/80's cars modified along the retro theme, and if it's happening in Llanelli, it's happening elsewhere. Could be a growing market?

I suspect EMAP wouldn't be keen on launching a new magazine right about now....
It would be possible to purchase the title I suspect.

The first SM i got was the one with Andy Saunders speed boat on the front cover think it was Sep 87 i was 14 at the time and i read it for years miss it big time. Custom car is just not up to the job these days but well done to those who put it together as it still covers the Custom car etc in the UK

Welcome aboard, Jason. What you got? Pics? Retro Cars imploded...To be blunt, for a long time before it finally died, it was pretty shoddy... Viva Retro Driver... *n

I think the negative comments towards Custom Car are a little harsh, it's a great magazine which sticks to it's niche well which ultimately maybe why it still survives after Street Machines demise.
I did love Street Machine and another magazine I loved was Car Hifi Magazine which also died.
The whole industry has just become too saturated with niche magazines now, in the past everyone had to buy the more general titles but now there seems to be a handful of titles for nearly every major marque.

I think MWF has a good point there. Both on the thing about niche markets and the thing about CC covering its patch well. Whether thats good for its future in the longer term I dunno, are there enough "next generation rodders" to keep it in business as the old guard hang up their driving licences and such? We'll see.
Yeah, if anyone wants to relaunch Street Machine I'm sure EMAP would at the very least lease the title rights to you.
