Anyone else really miss it? It's a thought that popped into my head whilst I was reading Bryn's US Hey thread - the amount of folk stating 'this should be a book!' made me think 'yeah, but it should be previewed in a magazine first...' I know this is gonna sound sycophantic in extremis, but never before or since SM's late 90s - early 00s phase - dominated by Bryn and Jon - has a magazine inspired me so much to get out there and build something. It was a Pop, by the way, and no, I never finished it. It's still in my folks' garden... Seems it took several magazines to replace it and there's still a void. Anyone else feel the same, or am I just weird?

I'm the same, used to love street machine it was all about the cheapest way to get a cool car. Custom Car has never come close to this 90% of the cars featured are way out of my and most peoples league with regards to price.

Yeah, I miss SM. The thing I cant understand is that Custom Car is now the only U.K. mag catering for hotrods and customs - which is a big scene in this country - yet it is still so thin and lacking in substance!

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

I'm loathe to criticise magazines because I know that keeping one going (let alone starting one) is very hard. But, as I've said in the past, CC seems to lack soul and passion - surely two key ingredients.

I just think CC is too focused towards keeping the owners of steel 1930s nostalgia styled (not rat rods) cars happy and curse word everybody else.

Glad I'm not the only one that feels like this afterall! Picked up CC a few months back and aye, it was $hit. Retro Cars went some way to filling the void and then it went tits up too! Regards the book idea, it would be brilliant if Bryn could get a quarterly published in the same vein as The Rodder's Journal!

I've got a load of old SM that i may be putting up for sale soon, 92 onwards.
I must admit i miss the magazine as well, was the 1 magazine i looked forward to every month, and featured a lot of the lower end custom scene, and had some good project cars (Bottle Rocket) as well as some dodgy ones (Dole Money Cruiser).
Why cant someone bring out a magazine to replace SM and Retro Car
RETRO MACHINE!!!!!
STREET CAR!!!!!

I bought the first issue of SM in 1979 when I was 8! SM was what I grew up reading and the Russ Smith/Nigel Grimshaw/Matt Howell era was my heyday - dare to be different suited my budget and my desire for otherwise untouched cars. I wasn't to keen on it right at the end, but I do miss it. The reality is though, is that I think it does have a replacement and you're reading it right now!
Retro-Rides is made up of the small communities that used to buy all the best magazines (Jalopy, Retro Cars, SM), sadly I don't think that we're enough to sustain any of them again. We're like jazz - all the coolest musicians listen to it...but the charts are still full of Girls Aloud and Robbie Williams!

I miss it as well. It was the magazine highlight of the month for me as well, always looked forward to it. The project cars were in the main, well chosen and interesting. DMC was probably ahead of it's time as such when you think about it. Colin Burnham's project cal-look Beetle was a very nice car that followed the style but included a more personal interpretation of the look. The Skoda Rapid was also pretty neat, and using a Skoda at the time was quite different. Don't remember which year I first bought SM, but probably around 83ish?

The first copy of street machine I bought was the one with our friends pro street kitten, I don't think I missed another for at least ten years. Loved it and will keep those mags for years yet.

I was 14 when i picked up the( May 79?) first issue. It was fresh, exciting and it had cars featured that I could identify with. Hot Car wasnt bad, CC was too far up its own anus and Hot Rod and Custom was too bland. It was probably responsible for raising the bar on customising in this country, jacking up the rear ends of MK1 Cortinas, painting the axles gold and fixing a rear fog light to the underside to illuminate, was no longer seen as acceptable. It probably died because, like the Dinosaurs,it couldnt adapt. I buy magazines still but none have magic of those early issues of SM. If only somebody would realise that the whole movement has become so fragmented, it would take just one magazine that could cater for all Retros, Rods, Customs and the like. It would make a killing, and save the rest of us from forking out an arm and a leg every month on umpteen mags, when we would only need one.

Most likely it wouldn't. I've very much been doing the maths on this for the past year and a half. It needs a different approach now to launch a magazine.

I loved it too, having bought my first issue around Feb 83 (Koenig Ferrari on cover). The candy model B that they put together is a very strong memory for me as well.
The DMC Chevette made a lot of sense, OK the paint was odd, but look when it was done. There was a red 2 door cavalier in it around then as well, a precursor to many of the things that get us all excited even now.
Rmad is right though, we're all getting our fill right here, more diversity, lots of input and lucky for us, no shortage of well written pieces!
