My dad's after a BMW 5-Series (e34), and I'm going with him to see a 525td tomorrow. Although I owned a 525i not long back, I don't really know much about them. I did a search of these boards as it's something that I'm sure has come up before, but it seemed to send my computer into some kind of seizure so I had to abort that little mission... So, I'm after some advice - what to look out for, stuff that goes wrong (does anything go wrong?! ;D)... that kinda thing. I know the TDS is quicker, but honestly something slower will suit him better. And being a diesel it's nice and economical, for a six-pot at least! ;D So, advice please!

I should have let him have a drive of mine when we were last down at BB towers, he'd not be going for the wrong make then, or a diseasel. other than that I can be of no assistance whatsoever. whos getting the volvo, you or steve?

W124 is on the list, but nothing is around at the moment and the Volvo gearbox is going I have been eyeing up the 2.5 5-pot, but space and time mean it'll probably just go through the auction house.

look out for rear axle bushes, steering boxes and metric TD tyres. ANY problem with idling or anything up with the engine either hand over a maximum of £10 or walk. could be the injector pump, can be £0000s to fix. although I've just re-gasketed our work mobile and that was easy TBH. so leaks are OK, hunting isn't! td uses the 520 loom so no LKM module to worry about. other than that, just the usual test drive and jiggle things. Check the bushes for he rear suspension mounts. They are a pig to change. I had to have them done on mine.
Also check the scuttle end of the bonnet for any signs of rubbing, it could point towards accident damage.
That's all i can think of at the mo.

what bodie said i've heard the tds is actually more economical too? and i've seen countless numbers of accident damaged repaired ones too, and shonky history, on a car which may be very well built but you still want to see regular servicing like...

Thanks chaps! It'll all come in handy first thing tomorrow when I'm crawling around under the car! ;D I'll have a good poke around the engine too... not familiar with diesel lumps so don't know how noisy it should be! Not very, I'd assume, being a Beemer. I really like the e34, I reckon it'll suit me old man well, as long as he takes care of it.
