VW LT40 recovery truck.
Very sad to see this go but unfortunately I must accept I just dot use it enough and I have lots of other projects I need to invest in.
It's a really fun show truck and useful enough to carry the odd vehicle around without fuss. Would suit another enthusiast like myself or perhaps a classic car /tractor business or similar.
Although it is an LT40 with front and rear leaf springs, it is plated for 3.5 tons. The bed is quite light weight and the weight without driver is 2100kg.
It has a working winch and I will include a pair of almost new Jacksta engineering 3 ton aluminum ramps (£700 new).
It is fitted with a 2.4 turbo diesel d24tic engine. I believe it to be a block from a volvo 940, with a head from a turbo diesel LT. It has a cam from a non turbo diesel engine. The fuel pump is modified and is running an 11mm pump head. This fuel pump so hugely capable but I have left the boost fairly low to prevent engine damage. It's running somewhere around 150-170 horsepower at the moment which is safe for a d24t.
This engine was fitted in June 2023 along with a new cambelt, tensioner, pulleys, water pump and aux belt. It was also fitted with a new clutch prior to installation.
The bodywork is okay, has been resprayed and looks presentable. A few bubbles and scabs but nothing major. It has had lots of welding especially around the windscreen prior to me buying it, pictures of this available upon request. The chassis is immaculate, and the entire rear section behind the axle was replaced several years ago at great expense. There is some rusty bits in the passenger inner wheel arch but this isn't structural.
I have fitted a fuel tank from a 2021 Isuzu truck on the passenger side, the original rear mounted one was full of rust and leaked. The push bar at the front is detachable with just 4 bolts.
It has led rear lights, brand new replica original supplying dealer plates, and the seats have been retrimmed in the correct fabric. The dashboard has been painted gloss black and the interior looks nice overall with just a slightly tatty headliner around the edges. I have a quiet exhaust and a loud exhaust with the truck, both are included. Wheels previously black, are now silver.
Doesn't burn oil or coolant, axle is dry and quiet, tyres are all legal and round. Comes with a box of spares as well.
Overall this truck is an absolute hoot to drive. With happily sit at 60mph. It's 25 feet long and drinks and smokes like early 2000s Jeremy Clarkson. Please make sure you have space for what is in essence and small lorry.
If you are expecting a dainty, economical and easy to drive recovery truck to run a recovery business, this is not the truck for you.
If you're looking for something to stand out, guzzle diesel (21 mpg)and smoke like a locomotive, with no power steering, no ABS and absolutely no electronics to go wrong then this is the ideal truck. I will miss it sorely but my other 10+ projects are staring me in the back of the head with angry eyes.
