I'm lucky enough to work in design, but my passion is in reusing what we have, rather than developing new products from scratch, and I struggle to find clients with the same vision, so every now and then I go out on my own.
A few months ago a friend asked if I could turn an acoustic guitar into a Bluetooth speaker. I have been doing this for years with old radios, so I thought why not. The more I looked into it though, the more I realised it couldn't just be a 1-off. I didn't want to convert the guitar in a way that would damage the guitar, meaning the only logical way to install was to use the sound-hole, but they aren't that big...
Long story short, I worked out a way. I designed an amplifier and speaker module which will fit through the sound hole of most full size acoustic guitars and clamp onto the edge around the sound hole without damage. It uses the guitar's body as an acoustic chamber and I am wrapped with the results. I've printed a few versions and have located a partner who will be able to make all the plastic parts from recycled milk bottle lids if I can scrape together the cash for tooling.
If anyone here wants one they are up on Kickstarter at the moment at
