Hello I have a 1947 Mercury coupe that I'm building to race dirt while still staying street legal. I plan to use two Hudson twin H inline 6s in this car paired to a 7speed manual transmission. Would love to know the best way to go about pairing the engines together for best functionality.

Knowledge is to know a Tomato is a 'fruit' - Wisdom, on the other hand, is knowing not to put it in a 'fruit salad'!

Ivanhoe built his "Medusa" with twin Jaguar six cylinder engines. He has a build thread on here with lots of detail.

will you be driving from the trunk ?
search Medusa on here and look how he joined his engines together

No, the engines will be under the hood. Meant to attach pictures of the engine bay.

Daring...
Do you plan on putting the engines besides or behind eachother?
Both options would give some real challenges I guess. Coupling the front and rear of a crank scares me a bit, would be tempted to put some rubber coupling in between to take up vibration and misalignment.
Running engines side by side would require a sort of intermediate gearbox to join them and drive a central output for the gearbox. Either with gears or chain and sprockets I guess. Seen it before on tractorpullers.

Planned on side by side, I've seen pictures of old drag cars with joining chains between engines and others that joined the blocks together to make one V engine like the two inline 8s to make a V16. I'm just not sure HOW they built that connection. I'll have a shop build it either way but I figured I'd need to know so I can better tell them what I'm trying to build. Side by side seems a simpler build.

Heres the pic I meant to attach of under the hood. Should be enough space for two inlines

Dumb question time....why?? A lot of work, difficult engineering & probably very expensive.
Simple solution would be just fit a Chevy V8?

Because I thought it would be fun to have a V12 with a larger volume than the average V8 without dropping my annual income on the engine alone. I'm aware building a car isn't cheap but I'd prefer to not to have to save like 20-40thousand dollars for a new engine. Each Hudson is 308cu.in. giving total 616cu.in. with the average V8 that's not the price of a car being at 454cu.in. or 502cu.in.

I'm not saying you shouldn't (hope it did not read that way) just asking why. 'Why not' is often the perfect answer It could cost you plenty for the engineering to link them both though.

I can remember back in the 70s or 80s there was a twin engined rod in a side by side configuration, in the rear axle there were two diffs (Jags I think) each supplied by one of the engines. This arrangement automatically catered for any mismatch of power or engine revs. I can't remember the name of it, but 'double trouble' springs to mind, but I'm not sure.

Side by side seems a simpler build. It would be 'easier' to join them side by side, with some sort of geared coupling, driving into a shared gearbox. Turning 2 L6 engines into 1 V12 means a custom block, custom crank and a lot of other custom bits (even more than joining them side by side) I hate to take the wind out of your sails, but this kind of custom engineering will quickly overtake any off the shelf solution cost-wise

Using two of the same kind of inliner also presents you with the problem of having one set of exhausts in the middle of the Vee. Which way do you send the pipes? Apart from anything, that'll eat up a lot of real estate as well as creating a hot spot in the middle of the motors. The two motors will have to be spaced far enough apart that the inlet side of one of them clears the other. Meaning that any kind of chain drive connecting the motors will need to be long and probably a bit of a dubious effort. It's not ever going to be reliable like a regular drive train. Well, maybe by the time you're on the third or fourth iteration it'll be ok. Link here to a twin engined drag car. Doubt any of this would live long on the street. www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/toymakers-evil-twin-engine-dragster.671912/I can see why these kind of set ups are only ever seen on drag cars or show cars. I'd fit a Mercedes V12 with ITBs.

How much engineering experience do you have? I've spent a lifetime fabricating and machining stuff and in various similar jobs and would think long and hard about tackling such a project. As soon as you get third party's involved the costs are going to be for prototype bespoke parts, the cost will reflect this. If you have a fully equipped shop then crack on!

600” straight 16 would be fun IMO Check out Allen Millyard on YouTube if you’re not aware of his engines. There’s also Ivan Dutton (Shed Racing) who has cut down some Mini engines. Principle is the same. You can usually find either of them at Goodwood or Brooklands events.
