Realistically I'm not going ot get round to finishing this. I've really lost the love.
It's a dog rough Mk2 GTi 8v 5 door that has had a lot of welding done. The intention was to use it as a Sunday, track and targa car but plans change.
It is cosmetically awful, its currently wearing a few shades of satin black and some rattle cans of variety.
It's had a replacement engine and rebuilt gearbox, new headlights, spotlights, new brakes, handbrake cables, pipes... There's probably not an original part left on the car, such was the state of it. Lots of it has been fit and make do because it was so far from being concours, or indeed roadworthy.
It needs a bit of fettling to get it running properly, and needs a few parts to finish it, off the top of my head -
I have had it running but it needs some fettling to get it running nice - tighten the exhaust and get the Digifant playing nicely.
Good bits - as above, it's had a replacement engine, rebuilt box, new gear linkage bushes. I think I put a new clutch in last year while I was in there.
My mate has done the majority of the welding underneath including floorpans, battery tray, boot floor replaced with a second hand one... Sills. Chassis rails. None of it is concours but its all welded solid, zinced, seam sealed, epoxied and undersealed.
New headlamps, spot lamps (with angel eyes for Max Power points), front repeaters with inbuilt sidelights.
New speakers all round but there's no head unit so it's all untested.
New aftermarket air filter as the original airbox was a jigsaw of broken bits.
I replaced the bumper irons with some good second hand ones as the originals were rotten beyond repair.
New pattern front wings. Repair panels to rear aches and rear lower panel.
Sunroof lifter replaced and sunroof drains modified with new pipework to avoid further rot.
Converted to a Mk3 fuel tank and pump and replacement fuel lines fitted front to rear, all rubber because I can't make the plastic joints. And the hose was physically from Pirtek so should avoid any fake eBay horrors like I've had before.
New windscreen.
New second hand front seats (from a 3dr) and carpet.
BAD BITS
All of the paint has been done bit by bit using satin aerosols and a fence sprayer. I'm not a bodywork man and I promise you it shows. The roof has then been subject to a wild gazebo attack in a storm where its scratched to curse word. The scuttle panel is the perfect example of why I've lost the love for the car - had it all in primer and then the weather started to change so I grabbed what I thought was the satin black and it turned out to be stove paint. Much swearing was had.
Also on the bodywork, I did put a new fuel filler surround in but then as I welded it I found more rot, as a result Ive lost the swage line in the panel. A skilled bodywork welder would be able to replace this and "make good".
See also the supposedly solid tailgate I got from a breaker. Less holes than the old one but still like a sieve. I've slapped some filler and paint over but again it needs someone who isn't a hamfisted moron to sort it.
The side trims have been removed and replaced and removed and replaced. Latest iteration (after the allen bolt effect looked terrible) is with sealant but they need warming and reshaping before refitting as they are escaping. Also the sealant I used was not as good as Silkaflex, as itadvertised.
Arch trims were knackered when we got the car, I think they're all in the shed but IIRC don't fit the rear pattern arch replacements.
Roof gutter needs replacing but are NLA new. Second hand ones pop up but you need to see they're in good order and I think are 5 door specific.
Side repeaters need replacing (but if that's a quibble you're looking at the wrong car)
I've refitted the original grille using new zip ties to replace the old - most clips knackered
NSF door handle is broken - cheap eBay part. I may have a spare set in the shed but if not its an hours work to swap them all with the front locking barrels.
Dash clocks need replacing and they're GTI specific with a stupid vacuum thing for the fuel sensor. I have two sets that may be repairable, one is GTI and one not, I think the GTI speedo is U/S and the rev counter on the other.
Glovebox was absolutely mullered inside and so I lopped the back off and put some black painted wood in with a USB charger and switch and wiring for a dashcam.
NSF door card was melted (!) by the previous owner, I assume during one of the previous bits of MOT patching, so I've cobbled together the bottom with some filler and that.
Window rubbers and clips need replacing all round, the old ones were rotten and brittle and came off in chunks.
Rear door glass needs replacing both sides as I managed to fire hot grinding sparks into them. Also the inside of the OSR rear door where the window slides in, was absolutely rotten. I have utterly bodged it but it's worth considering a SH door.
Rear lights both cracked and need replacing.
Front fogs currently US as I ran out of patience, can't remember if the wiring and bulbs are there or not atter swapping the irons. I was considering making them into cooling ducts or air intakes.
This is a project. A big part of me still wants to finish it but I have too many projects and I want to work on cars I'm not piddled off with...!
Currently sitting on P slots which probably can be included for the right price.
