My Westfield uses a modified Cortina rad with no filler cap. The cap is on the thermostat housing along with the overflow. I want to fit a recovery tank so have bought a suitable one off ebay. For how I am going to use it I think it needs a vent hole in the cap but where is it best to fit it ? I know a lot of older cars I have seen with overflow bottles have them fitted down quite low with a tube in the top that goes down to the bottom of the bottle. Id always assumed any overflow coolant just sat in the bottle and stayed there but stuff I have read suggests coolant will also go back into the rad once it cools down. This is the bottle. I'd planned to fit it somewhere near the rad and try and get it fairly high up. I'd be interested to hear what others think, thanks.

Usually the pressure cap goes on the expansion bottle and a non pressure cap would go on, in your case, the thermostat housing. Which means the overflow pipe is under system pressure, and you need to cater for that.

Depends on the system, the MR2 works pretty much that way with the correct cap it should work, but not sure that bottle is suitable. The pipe from the cap to the bottle needs to go to the bottom of the bottle so it's always under the coolant level(in the bottom and there needs to be an overflow line from the top of the bottle. Also be difficult to see the coolant level and the size may be an issue, depends on how much volume of coolant there is once the engine is up to temp. This is a page from the Toyota engine manual describing how it works, may be of some help. In this setup the bottle doesn't need to be low down, on the mr2 it's level with the top of the engine you can see the pressure cap and bottle in this picture

Thanks for the comments and link. I will have to do a bit more searching as I have read about what I have mentioned but there wasn't a lot of info. Seems to be more of a thing on boat engines.

If you have a 'return' type cap - 2 seals and the vac valve - The overflow sitting in the space between the two seals - then all you need is the tube from the overflow submersed in the fluid in the bottle and yes the bottle will need a small vent - drill a 2mm hole in the cap - the Tube then needs to be a seal fit through the hole in the cap and end up a couple of mm from the bottom of the bottle.
Exactly as the MR2 system and description.

As has been said (if it has a return type cap) when the cars hot, the fluid level in the overflow tank will rise; dropping again when the system cools (the fluid returns to the main coolant loop). Imprezas have this system; as I couldn’t fit the original bottle I used one from a Suzuki Jimny that has a neat vent built into the cap and cold and hot level marks (bottom right in bay). Note, I can’t see why the overflow bottle would need to be mounted higher than the pressure cap and overflow outlet; as it works by pressure in the main loop.

Thanks guys. Had a proper read of the article and even found a speeded up video showing it working on YouTube! There is a good video from Car Builder Solutions that explains it all as well. I'll have to check the cap to see if it's the correct type. When the new radiator arrives I will post how I fitted it all.
