Hi.
I have a 1991 Peugeot 205 GTI with factory A/C. I’m in the nice position that my only current issue with the car is the A/C is not working.
The whole system is good apart from the temperature probe on the evaporator/expansion valve which has gone open circuit.
I can’t get a replacement part for love nor money, and this one is not measurable because it is blown, and the value is not readable on the component because it is encased in resin. I don’t think the resistance values are standard across different models but I don’t know.
The owners club hasn’t been able to help on this one (unusually). You are the best group of automotive McGuyvers I can think to ask.
any ideas how I can find a suitable value of thermistor to replace it with and get this system up and running?

Hi Jimi,
I don’t have anything other than a schematic. The information I have given is from a users group. It looks like I will have to degas the system, remove the dash and dismantle the heater box to get anything more. I was hoping to get ahead of the curve. If I need to dismantle it all and then ask I will, but I didn’t want a long gap between dismantling and reassembling it because I forget things these days…

Oh I wish. Nothing I can find on any European eBay. I have searched for the part no, and the description in French, Spanish and German. Nothing in the Australian, Portuguese or UK owners forums. Nothing from any aftermarket manufacturer that cross-references to the part number. Nothing on any of the European breakers brokers. I am keeping up the search! The part was only fitted to 205s and 309s with AC up until March ‘92, which Was very few cars at all in Europe, even less in the UK. It was an expensive cost option that was only available on higher-end models. Those that are still around, are now in rebuild/resto territory and the owners aren’t keen on letting go of parts that are rarer then poor quality wobbly children's play pony poo.

It's probably a NTC thermistor (very commonly used for evaporator temperature monitoring in HVAC and Refrigeration) not expensive and readily available. The problem is finding the correct value.

well found 👍
it adds it to the cart and you have to register your details so looks like it’s in stock
a simple email in latvian and english to info@autospares.lv
should get you an answer

I have found that one too. If you run the site through Google translate it says that stock for rare/pre2005 parts is not reliable.
It also only includes costs and timings for delivery to their warehouse in Latvia, so it seemed a high risk/low reward outcome.
I will try an email to them. That is a very good plan. Thx.

when I had a similar issue on my 87 range rover I ended up buying a generic capiliary type Air con thermostat and mounting on the dash to use as AC temp control

The Latvian site has drawn a blank. I bought a probe for a Peugeot 206 on the off chance, but it doesn’t work.
Judging by the failure mode of that probe and the experience of the Australian 205 owning community, I am coming to the conclusion that it is not a thermistor but a temperature operated switch. Closed when cold and open when hot, with a suggested value of around 6deg celcius as the switch point. It has to be slim enough to fit between the fins of the evaporator and waterproof.

If it's a temp switch then you could relatively easily adapt something like this to work LINKY

The one I linked to is basically an electronic version of the above, either one will work 👍
