i m usually into Fords (of course UK built ones) but have recently bought a 68 Morris 1300. what oil is best for engine/gearbox. is 20W50 okay or do i need something special? thx in advance for helpful answers.

It uses the opposite of special, just 20w40 multigrade used in millions of cars for decades

thx guys, i ll try 20W50 then, as i have this at home anyway. i was just worried because of the gearbox and the genuine owners manual suggests 10W30- can t believe that!

I would have thought that you might as well curse word in it as use 10w30 (unless you're in the Arctic in winter). As a serial BMC A series owner since 1983 I've always used 20w50.
I did have one that was so shagged it burnt a litre of oil an hour which I used to thrash mercilessly until the oil light came on then fill it up with waste oil out of our diesel tractor but that's another story.

I've always used 20W/50, something reasonable quality to give the gearbox a bit of protection and change it fairly reguarly (I would suggest no more than 6K miles).
Engines and boxes in these are very similar/the same as mini's of the same era and if looked after are reliable.

I'd get a classic 20 50 oil with ZDDP, which is a anti wear addative I'd be wary of using a modern. oil without it in a gearbox.

Yep 'classic' 20w 50 and 3000 mile service intervals.
If its anything like my Mini of old it will change its oil with leaks in about that time anyway....
I'd have a look on Mini forums for more info and it might be worth getting a 20L drum rather than 5L as easier to have it to hand if its a keeper.
Grease gun on the ball joints and suspension arms critical as well.

Nice find. My first car was one of these in Snowberry White, came from my Grandad when he gave up driving. Does yours have the strip speedo? I had to average out my speed as at 60 the strip bounced between 50 and 70!  Guessing you already found this site - has some decent info if you sign up I gather: ado16.info/ |

yep,it´s strip speedo and i ve already risked a tenner and subscribed a few weeks ago. but anyway thx for the link. the interior needs a proper clean after long term storage  |
