Just noticed Alfa have introduced a new Hybrid SUV, and named it The TONALE, sorry thats just a bit too TONAIL for me....... they are not the first to do this Chevrolet introduce the Nova, which never sold well in Spanish speaking countries, NOVA translates in Spanish to NO-GO Any more well car names out there with that clash with the local language

The Nova story is probably second only to a Jasper Carrot joke being attributed to John Lennon in the ranks of discredited myths. In fact the Nova in it's various versions sold quite well in Spanish speaking countries. It's true that no va as seperate words means doesn't go but the single word nova is latin for new, and one would presume that people in predominantly catholic countries would know the difference. Back to the original question though, I always thought the Honda Jazz was a highly inappropriate name, I mean you just can't imagine Miles Davis or Charlie Parker driving one can you? Then there's the Renault Scenic which is (in my opinion) one of the ugliest cars ever produced. And finally There's the Pontiac LeMans. Made in many different versions from the early 60s, some more sporty than others but when it comes to naming a car after one of the worlds most famous race tracks you have to draw a line somewhere.

Datsun/Nissan Cedric named after a public schoolboy? Delusions of grandeur? Hints of Humber Super Snipe/Imperial and Austin 3litre.

The Pajero nameplate derives from Leopardus pajeros, the Pampas cat. Mitsubishi marketed the SUV as the Montero in North America, Spain, and Latin America (except for Brazil and Jamaica) due to the term "pajero" being derogatory (meaning "curse word") in Spanish.

VW Touareg. It unfortunately just makes me think of "Toerag".
In the 90s (possibly late 80s?) there was a special edition Astra called the "Epic". Given that it was based on the lower level models with (I think) a 1300 engine, it was anything but.

Austin Allegro - Austin All Aggro Nissan Juke - Nissan Joke Fiat Argenta - bad name / bad timing - launched in the UK just after Argentina invaded the Falklands.
Most appropriate name ever with the benefit of hindsight? - The Ford Classic, 'cause now it is.

Good thread...I'm thinking:
Ford Probe is the first that springs to mind for obvious reasons Cadillac are releasing the Optiq, which just makes me think of optics behind the bar The Mitsubishi Carisma that is spelt wrong and has none The VW Sharan just puts me in mind of the name Sharon, and then Eastenders

I know these are trim levels instead of names, but Vauxhall Merits had none, Ford Popular( and Popular Plus) was a misspelling of poverty just like Austin ~~~~~ City was pronounced 'curse word'.
Triumph's Dolomite would have been better named after a molehill than a mountain Vauxhall Victor - just who did they think they were kidding? Avenger was a bit ambitious for an ordinary four-door family car Minor hasn't aged well as a name Marina - where it should have been drowned at birth

Vauxhall Adam.... AMC Gremlin... Subaru Brat.... Chevrolet Celebrity...

The Adam makes more sense when badged as an Opel - with a Vauxhall badge it's like having an Aston-Martin Enzo

Always thought the Mitsubishi Carisma was an unfortunate name for a somewhat bland motor despite the difference in spelling.
The other creative/unfortunate reintepretation of car names was the Vauxhall Chevette becoming the Chuv-it in some quarters
