Is there a better approach to trying to get a kid their first insurance than Compare The Market / Money Supermarket etc and just bending over and taking it?
I have a 17 year old who has inheritted my mum's old Toyota RAV4 and is determined they are going to have it. Hmmm. I sympathise with the sentiment! I inherrited a Capri when I was 19 off my grandparents and that was a pain in the rear to insure back then too.
Usual tricks of "putting a parent on the cover" and so on are not bringing the price down on the comparison sites.
FWIW I am getting c. £2300 quotes on this car:kid combo.

Put in that the cover is not required for at least 30 days and see what that does to the price quoted.

For the type of vehicle and age of driver, 2300 doesn't sound horrific compared to some of the horrors I've heard ![:-X](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/lipssealed.png)

Is that including having a black box fitted? That can bring it down a fair whack. As can parking off street, ideally garaged overnight but I'm guessing you know that already.
Fwiw it's not just the young 'uns that are getting nailed right now. Most of the keyless entry stuff is feeling the clout. we changed cars last year and when the renewal came up, the insurance wrote to us to say they weren't offering to renew. 57 with 7 years no claims living in a good postcode, car garaged overnight. Makes me feel like a teen again.

I was paying 2200 for a Nissan Micra at 17 in 2008. Sounds about right.

Send them off on a round the world working holiday trip for a few years with the flights booked for the insurance cost and see if the quote comes down when they get back?
