NOW SOLD!
Nice solid Singer Gazelle. Runs and drives well, but paint lets it down a bit. I got this a couple of years ago to get it running right and use come rain or shine and for local events , but to be honest while I got it going pretty well. But I’m just not using it, have other things I’d rather work on and need the space.
MOT until 14th December 2024 and ready to enjoy as is and improve as you go
Originally 1965 but when was exported back it was given a Q plate. After some digging it appears this was because it's old reg document had a typo on the VIN, was originally TEU199C which is linked to B73105064H[5]0, but the 5 should be an 'S'. You might be able to use this info with a heritage certificate to get it an age related plate, or maybe you just keep it on a Q and mod the heck out of it (please do the later, would be awesome!)
Has a bit of an interesting history in that at some point it is believed to have been Robsen Green’s character’s car in series 4 of Grantchester (have a document scan showing ownership by the production company).
Mechanically it’s been rebuilt at some stage with what appears to be Sunbeam running gear (1725 alloy head engine with Weber DGV twin choke carb) and overdrive gearbox plus a conversion to an alternator.
In my ownership I have;
- rebuilt and rejetted the carb
- fitted electronic ignition
- fitted a new battery
- serviced the engine (oil, plugs, filters etc.)
- fitted a new clutch slave and master cylinder5
- put on new tyres all round
- added the red stripes and painted wheels
- replaced fresh air ducting (the silver stuff under bonnet is insulated duct, to help keep temps down in summer
Now runs and drives well and pulls strongly for a mid 60’s car. Could maybe do with a bit more tuning on the secondary choke to get the most out of it. Suspension seems is good, no knocks or bangs, and steers as well as these ever did. Brakes are ok, though bit spongy – another bleed might be a good shout.
Interior isn’t too bad, nice red vinyl. Dash has been re-veneered but not a great finish. All dials/lights etc. appear to work ok except the speedo massively overreads.
It’s had a fair amount of welding in the past, good and solid but not invisible by any means. Front wings are fibreglass and fitted well but are crazing. Doors/bonnet/boot all solid, though the drivers door looks to have had some metal let in and shut lines not great. Chrome is ok, but pitting in areas. Screen rubbers seem to be leak free (though obviously been resealed) and the door rubber trims are getting pretty perished.
As for the paint, well it used to be white and if you polish it much more it’ll start being white again, especially on the nearside doors where the black paint is very thin. I’ve given it a quick going over and it looks pretty good but has many flaws, the roof is badly blistered for example. Not going to be a show car without a respray, put it that way. There's a reason it's cheap.
Happy to take potential buyers out for a spin etc.
