The early years of the firm known as Studebaker began in 1852 and was originally a coach builder, buggies, carriages etc. It eventually began producing cars and trucks and operated until 1966. Some of them were quite good for the time period. Vehicles like the Golden Hawk were very interesting indeed. I've Hemi swapped a few of the 50's era trucks, but this is not what is happening to the 1948. It's incredibly solid and dry for a truck found only 20 minutes from Akron Ohio, where they dump more salt on the roads each year than a truckload of margarita glasses on Cinco deMayo. So to find one like this, that runs & drives with a 70's era V8 already in place? Pretty rare. I've never been a fan of these "bubble fender, pointy nose" American trucks, but this one has found me. Cover your eyes! It's UGLY! ! But it's solid.
My first reaction is to make the brakes work, you have to pump them like crazy before they grab. I've only moved it off the trailer and it seems to run like a swiss watch! It's a quiet runner although the 302 V8 that originally made 210BHP is likely to have lost a few ponies since 1971. It's said that the engine and trans came from a 1971 Ford Torino. The Torino was offered with a 429 Cobra jet engine, this is NOT what we have. It's a base model 2bbl 302 pushrod v8 engine, but it sounds mint. ish
This is how I first saw it, made the deal and now it lives here. I'll get it inside and see what we actually have in a few days. No crazy high dollar swap for this one and I'll paint it all one color for sure. Single stage paint, "one day spray" as we like to say.

WOW! 158,000 quid is a TON of money. But that thing sure is cool! I'm likely to have farrrr less in this one lol I'm struggling to find a color. I think perhaps white body, gray accents?

i love studebaker trucks, mainly the later ones, partyl because of the rarity value "a what?"
interestingly enough i have a new old stock master cylinder for a 1948 studebaker pickup.... (same as a 50s international pickup) assuming yours has the original one that is.

I checked online and they're everywhere for about 50 bucks. The last parcel of goodies I posted to my UK buddy cost us 65! Thanks for the mention though. I ordered the paint supplies today. Winter white with a light machine gray for the trim bits. I don't really have the skills for a proper metallic paint finish or that would open up the color choices! I need to stay cheap on this one, it needs to hit a certain number for sure.

I do love the later trucks, mainly because of Cannonball's in Hot Rod.
The early ones are ugly but cool. Almost look like a COE that's been stretched into a wormhole.

The plan is to do the entire body in white, the grille and headlight rings, front bumper in gray. The side steps and rear bumper are made from wood- so I'll dark walnut stain those, because I have a can of it already. It should transform this ugly duckling of a thing! I'll detail the engine bay with black, probably. It's old, but it runs really good! Surprising actually.

I like the engine bay silver finish , think it would go well with the white / grey scheme..

You know, leaving the engine bay that color, makes the job just a little bit easier! Done!

The idea of a "1 day spray" paint job flew ever so casually out the window. Over 10hrs, still not ready to spray, hopefully tomorrow.

This is what I got done: The paint isn't great, as to be expected. If one were to wet sand it, apply another few coats and wet sant & polish out- it would be great. This is what I needed and it can go to a real painter from here. Trim bits and final assembly tomorrow. Basically 25hrs.

Thanks all! Our one remaining dog likes these old trucks. She's sad on the inside from a recent loss, but she gets more treats and attention now. Also, extra rides in the truck
