I have the opportunity to buy a car (reasonably rare, but almost never valuble) via marketplace but don't have the time to go and view it/meet with the owners.
How bad an idea is it to pay them and arrange collection through shipley or the like.
A couple of points to bear in mind.
The car will likely never see the road again (potential donor)
It's a cheap car (well under a grand)
It's in reasonable condition besides needing welding, there's a slim possibility if its no good as a donor I could weld it, test it and pass it on at a later date.
Good idea?, or asking for trouble?
Share your experiences please.

I've done it a couple of times.
What kind of feeling are you getting from speaking to the owner?
The other potential is to do a deposit, and once the transporter has arrived, then pay the rest of the money..

I haven't spoken to the seller as yet.
I know there's no way I'd allow a car I was selling to be collected having received only a deposit though so I can hardly expect anyone else to.

Did this with the Landy and for much more than a Grand!
Non refundable deposit, rest to be paid via bank credit once the delivery driver has said it's as described and (importantly) he can load it.
If you pick a car transport service, not a trailer behind a removal luton, the collection driver will understand what's happening. The driver who collected the Landy sent me pictures and told me how good it sounded as it drove onto the trailer!

Bit sketchy maybe but no more so than buying anything else of similar value secondhand online.

I've bought and sold a few cars unseen, and only been bitten a couple of times (All due to not being in the condition advertised). If its a parts car and you don't care as much about the condition because of that, then as long as it exists and the seller isn't just going to take the money and run, I don't see an issue.

done it loads, I've previously bought : a Dodge Charger on Ebay in 2001 from USA which turned out to be a complete wreck, but I think I broke even still. Other experiences have been better 7 other vehicles from USA, and 4 from Australia. All as expected more or less. Last year bought a cheap berlingo and had it 'Shiply'd' down, it needed a bit more work than I expected but still a good deal and was cheap enough to buy that it would be worth that money in parts.Car back on the road now

I've bought at least two off here and more on ebay all sight unseen. Always expected a problem or something that wasn't described. Been happy with what I've received. Only had one problem with a so called recovery company who expected it to roll after being stood for 20 years. Had to go and collect it with a proper truck and on the back within 30 minutes.
