So.. i love MK1 Mx5's.. ive always had them and they're great, i also made a realization that i've had 3 Volvo 340's and always hanker for another.. So i accidently bought yet another.
interested in peoples knowledge on them and any input, i know Speedy had one years ago which made me fall in love with them, back when he was in Bristol he took me for a passenger ride in it, was a properly cool thing.
I'll start a build thread at some point.. I'm driving 300 miles to collect some bits on Sunday...
This ones the best yet, despite being a 1.4 DL its an 82' 343.
Overall it's solid but a bit tatty and the headgasket has gone.. nothing that cant be solved.
Likely off the road since the early 90's! Tyres were made in 'East Germany' no electronic MOT history and the tax disc is 1993.
Cool as hell. I love it. It's also tax and MOT exempt which is a huge benefit as it wont cost me money sitting around.
Some pictures to keep people interested.
So.. plans/ideas?
I have some knowledge of 340's.. not tons.
The 1.4 wont be staying long term, id like to sort if and waft around for a bit then change it for something more spritely.
Options i've come up with so far:
1. 1.7 Engine from a Volvo 340 - I'm picking one up and some bits to go with it Sunday, this might be the interim option but probably not worth it long term. You also need some of the 1.7 bits for other engine swaps so it's worth grabbing it anyhow.
2. Volvo 440 2L NA or 1.7 Turbo Lump - F Series engine that bolts straight in, not too common anymore to find.
3. Clio 'Valver' F7p or F7R Engine, 1.8/2.0 16V - Easy enough to convert but again not super common engines anymore. Drops straight in.
4. F4R Engine (Clio 172/182 i beleive?) In theory can be done, due to being chain driven needs sump mods/subframe mods? Not impossible... not really seen it done so i guess it may be more effort than its worth.
5. MX5 Engine - Will need an adaptor plate for the bellhousing but great engines and i know them well, never seen it done but could be fun.
It will also get lowered with some wheels. I want this as a summer classic car show cruiser.
