A mate of mine came around with an A series manifold (Metro I believe). The steel pipes have rotted badly and he wondered if I could repair it. Does anyone know how these are put in originally? Cast in, pressed in or somfink else.

I would say it depends what the casting looks like around the steel pipe. If the casting / pipe junction is clearly defined as in the casting has been bored and pipe pressed in. Or if cast in, then the junction would be more blended, for the want of a better word, where the sand or die meet. If all that makes sense.

Thanks for the reply Colin. I am fairly certain they are cast in, I was hoping someone could confirm it. As it happens a bit of Gargling has found a "How to" for this, albeit not quite to my taste. I'll have to speak to my mate.

Yes I would have thought cast in, if only because it's a cheaper process.

I think you can get a kit to replace the pipes, you removed the old pipe some how, and the new stainless one is stuck in place with some epoxy. You could try getting it out and see if some copper pipe would do it?

That's for the fuel injection manifold, this is an SU carb jobby.

i had a look but cant see the page i saw ages ago, i am sure the tubes come out and they are only like 1" deep into it. then you get the new ones and push/glue them in.

I presume you're talking about the inlet manifold with a water-heating pipe going through it? It's advised to bypass it anyway, as heating the inlet manifold reduces power! I've left it unplugged on my SU HIF carbed Midget 1275 engine in my Minor Traveller, and haven't had any problems with carb icing in winter.

I dailied a Wolseley 1300 for several years and also had no cold weather related issues, even when driving in snow.

It's possible they are screwed in, as per some of the A-series bypass hose stubs; try attaching a pair of Mole Grips and twisting them...

This is my solution. The stubs were already cut off by myself following a repair I found on a forum that deals with A series engines. Needless to say it was wrong. The first thing was to carefully file a groove in the stub wall using a good square file (it was the sharpest I had as it was new, a triangular one would also do). Apologies for the curse word photos, don't know what happened. This enables a small sharp chisel to catch the edge. Then I folded the sides in to collapse the tube. This still took some getting out and fought back. They are definitely cast in. In the following photo you can see a small pip. The tube has a hole in it so that when the manifold is cast it locks the tube in. Those who suggested pulling them out would be in for a hard time. Here's the tube finally out, you can see the hole even though I cut through it. The hole that is left is a touch bigger than 5/8"bsp tapping size so thats what it got. I will fit barb fittings to suit with sealant. The one shown was what was on the shelf.

Nice solution, certainly looks alot more durable than thin-wall steel tube.
