So I have obviously not got enough projects on the go. I keep looking at other things. One thing I spot now and again is a decent prewar chassis with a colapsed body on top of it and the statement "Buff log book here, V5C will need applying for" So. Lets assume I bought some utter garden-find shed of a thing with the intent that it would become a vintage special. This 1934 Daimler Light 15 would be VSCC eligible as a "post vintage thoroughbred" - assuming that it gets a pass for special conversion by the committee but thats another story. The one I'm interested in is how the process goes from "old hulk with buff book" to "viable project with a current V5C" Once its got the V5C it should be simple enough and I understand the points system. Its getting to the point I have a V5C for something like that.... Anyone got current knowledge? I bet they would inspect it. But does it need to be any more than the original pile of bits?

My understanding is if the reg isn't either live on the system or archived then they won't issue a new logbook unless it looks like a complete car that might be drivable (doesn't need to run/ start/ stop just look like it might) and the chances are that they will want it inspected. On the plus side if it has had any sort of log book issued since the old card one then it should still be findable in their archive of inactive registrations which need to be looked up manually.
If you were going to build a rod out of it and it didn't have a logbook to start with I would ensure you can get one before going too much further, if however you intended to restore what was there it should be relatively simple to get one once the bulk of the work is done.

I’ve done this with a bike for a mates dad .
You ideally need to go through an approved (by dvla) owners club . They can confirm age/model etc .
There’s a chance it will get inspected & it needs to be mostly there .
I’ve had one bike inspected that I imported (so maybe slightly different). The inspector wasn’t interested in seeing it running , just wanted to confirm it existed & had correct chassis & engine numbers as all the paperwork .
I think taking good photos is a massive help . Clear pics of any identifying numbers . Make sure each picture links to the next ( overlapping) . You can’t send too many pics , the more the better .

What it says on .gov and what they actually do are sometimes 2 different things though... I bought a car which has a live registration, its on the DVLA website, its SORN, etc. I didn't get the V5C with it so I sent the £25 and the form in, and quite outside the stated process we now are into sending photos of the car, providing writen evidence, etc. They say "4-6 weeks" for this online and on the form and I am into 4-6 months more like. On the back of this I would not buy another car without a V5C which "just needs applying for" without a very good reason... Reminds me, I had better chase them again...

I know, I too have had previous "dealings" with the DVLA 😔 But it's still the starting point going by their requirements, although there seems to be a real lack of consistency in how they deal with applications like this.🤔

Yeah my V62 application - I have an email from them from 16th October thanking me for my submitted evidence and that I need to wait for 10 weeks. So I phoned today and "we haven't recieved your evidences" ugh.

Try taking it up with whichever case officer sent that last letter thanking you for them, they normally put a direct email on that type of corespondance. I'm guessing that a digit of the VIN has been recorded incorrectly somewhere...
