Good morning
I've had this E34 for a while now but havn't gotten much time to getting around to fixing/building it.
I've just put on the wheels and left it at that for the moment due to other projects.
It's been wonderfull pulling my trailer and used for a variety of jobs over the past spring and summer.
Now winter has come I'd like to tackle some jobs to get it in a slightly better condition.
Before I start to replace the suspension with a coil over kit I'd like to solve the following issue.
When I bought it (in wintertime last year) it had a terrible cold starting problem.
I can best discribe it as follows:
- starts terribly when the outside temperature is below 10-15°c.
- starts perfectly fine when the outside temperature is above this "limit"
- when it's cold I need to crank it for a very long time after which it finaly fires up, presumeably due to compression
- runs absolutely perfect one it fires up
- starts on the dot when engine is hot or has been driven recently
- start pilot or similar have a small positive effect to this problem, but not the instant improvement you'd expect or see when there is a fueling issue
- multiple glow cycles has little to no effect
- problem is similar whether the car has been stood still for 14 days or 1 day
Some additional info;
- 1992
- 525 TDS
- engine is replaced by the previous owner due to piston damage with the exact same engine type (although some weird thing is going on with the tachometer since the swap where it shows exactly double the revs)
Things I've checked:
- compression was good when the engine was replaced (I have pictures of this)
- Glowplugs are getting 12v and heating up for the correct amount of time (not new however)
- I've tried unplugging the temp sensors on the head but this had no effect whatsoever
- Battery is brand new
Due to the car firing up rather well under warmer conditions I've got a feeling no fuel issue is at play here.
Does anyone have any idea what I could check or try next?
I thought about replacing the glow plugs as my next step just to rule them out but one of you might have a more focused idea as to what the problem might actually be?
Here's a pic of the car doing some farmwork.
