Morning all. This thread is based on something much older than most are possibly in to, so it may fall flat on its face, but we'll see. I know a few of you on here already know the project that i'm working on but thought id share. Before i start with the spreedster thread, a little intro. I'm based in Sussex and spend most of my time making stuff! I like to try and be creative in what i build, but it is all based around "old stuff". I'm a member of the VHRA and run my 1931 A coupe that i built at the events. couple of pics of my coupe. That ^ is not my house Credit to Mark Thomas for the last pic, and Andrew Green (i think it was Andrews pic, apologies if wrong) for the 2nd to last pic

So on with the speedster. The plan for this was to use a totally stock chassis from a Model A with all stock running gear, all in stock locations. SO in effect it is just a body swap, albeit a bespoke body. I started with some ply and some polythene sheet and mocked up (very crudely) what i thought looked about right - The owner of the build came and confirmed it was on the right track. (the body will continue on from where the ply stops, more on that later) The body of the speedster was agreed to be narrower than a standard model a body, so that meant i had to build the subrails too. (The subrails are what mounts to the chassis, the body is built around the subrails) I got some zintec bent up locally to the profile i drew, this included 2 main lengths and some cross members. I then had to cut the bent profile about to get the subrails to form the curve of the body. and shaped to required profile

Very cool.
Cant wait to see the rest of this build.
I like your Coupe a lot as well.
Can you show some more pics of the streamlined nose/grille/radiator opening?

I built the front end of the coupe for a "something to do" project, to look a bit different and also did it in the hope it helped streamline the car for running at Pendine. Some have said its a bit "marmite" which i do get, but enjoyed making it anyway!

Welcome to one of the better survivor forum sites. Excellent work as mentioned. I was going to tag in metalshapes, but fortunately he beat me to it. Looking forward to following this build as well.

I can vouch for the A, having been for a ride in it - it's as nasty as it looks (in the very best possible sense of the word)
Looking forward to seeing the progress on the Speedster
p.s. that photo in the field is ace

You'll have noticed there is nothing tying the rear of the subrails together at this point. The brief for this speedster was not to have a typical speedster rear end - so no boat tail. There needed to be room for some tools, a picnic, some spares etc etc. So the rear end is shaped more tub like (or phaeton) - it wont have the bead running around the top though, so simpler. I'm not a painter, but said id paint the steel parts. Epoxy primer, filler primer then top coat for the firewall and the top of the subrails, the bottom of the subrails will get gravitex in place of the filler primer. This is slightly out of sequence as id also made a frame for the cowl at the rear of the firewall, which il show separately. I also found a used fuel tank that was perfect for this build so painted that too. Gravitex to underside for added stonechip protection.

As i said, slightlty out of sequence, but i had to make a frame to form the cowl area (normally where a model fuel tank would be), this took a fair amount of effort and 2 goes at it - I took lines starting at the grill shell backwards until I thought everything looked right. I roughed out an overlong bonnet top which helped as i could make the framework from the subrails and up until the frame touched evenly to the underside of the bonnet. I used square tube and bent it to the correct curve of the bonnet, with the occasional pie cut where needed. Templating the bonnet and the start of the frame work going into place
