So I finally killed the Passat replacement Beetle on Friday and was offered this the week before so I've been sat on it. Not my first choice of car and not the cheapest at (£750) but he's letting me drip him payments so that suits me. It's roughish on the outside but interior is very clean. I've had to change ignition barrel straight away and now found out the speedo isn't working. Needs a grill and will replace bumpers at some point, bottoms of the doors are crusty. Cleaned up and painted steelies, tinted side repeaters and rear lights, debadged and removed rear wiper and looks better for it.

Great cars these, had a few in my time. Zetec S bumpers and wheels transform the looks if you can find any.
As for the speedo, do you have any ABS/traction control lights on? These have magnetic ABS rings in the wheel bearings and IIRC one of the fronts provides the signal for speedo.

It cleans up pretty well and drives very nice. Has the local car wash give it a once over.

These are a great car - someone I knew had a fleet of cabs and these always did way in excess of 300k before they were sold at 5 years old. The 2.0 is a peach, I've one in the later MK4, and I've got to 263k so far on a 2011.

different engine, from 2007 on they used the PSA DW10 engine in the mk3, a lot more refined than the earlier Ford Puma 2.0, a variant of the 2.2 in the ST TDCI 155 bhp engine, and the 2.4 transit engine.
Ford did continue to use and develop the Puma but only in the vans, also ironically used by PSA/Sevel Sud in the boxer until 2016, where they went to the DW10, and the transits got the wet belt Panther chocolate teapot.

You learn something every day! Had always assumed that the engine in the MK3 was a DW10 too, like in a 406. Also very surprised to see it in those vans, thought that being French they'd get a DW too! I know that it's in the Transit, as when I looked at a buddy's 2007 one, it looked an awful lot like our old '99 Focus Endura-DI.

It's been earning it's keep this last few weeks moving house and lots of tip runs. Were downsizing from a 3 bed detached to a 2 bed bungalow. Boot space is cavernous!!

Nothing really, it had started a judder at certain points through rev range and needed a couple of drop links, was still driving it and had 9 month MOT on it. Nobody wanted it and needed it out of the way
