Chaps
I've finally decided I really need a W124 Merc estate in my life
Narrowed it down to two
One is a 300TE 24v with all the bells & whistles, the other seems pretty basic compared being a E220 with cloth trim BUT the kicker is the E220 has impeccable service history, and pristine bodywork whereas the 300 has all leather, but a few areas that look bothersome and i'm not 100% on the service history as yet
I don't know the first thing about any of the Merc models, trims etc etc, they're both around the 3-4k mark so not bank breaking, is the E220 one to steer clear of or are they all much of a much?
it'll be driven 60 mile round trip twice a week to work so won't lose my head over mpg or anything
So, which one would you choose and why?
Thanks for any input

I would say the 300 will be better, simply because it has the nice smooth six-cylinder engine, very befitting of an E-class.

Yep, the 300-24 would be my first choice. Lovely & sweet, high rev'ing straight six with c.220bhp against a lowly E220 c.140bhp. Plus the spec/options is always better with the 300-24. Rust would be my main concern on any W124 at this stage. Still, wouldn't kick the E220 out of bed if it's in far better condition than the 300-24.

The 220 will feel fairly underpowered tbh. Reliable but slow. I had one as a daily years back and it was comfy but slow. Did I mention it was slow?
The 300-24 is fairly rare in a wagon. W124 rust is not like normal rust though. If it’s showing on the outside it’ll be rotten all up behind the front wings and won’t have any sills left either. and they’re a huge job to do properly. I wouldn’t go anywhere near one that is showing rust. The 300-24 is also the one with the troublesome wiring loom. The insulation degrades and they start doing odd things. It *might* just be a facelift thing, but it’s definitely a 6cyl cars thing.

Rust rust rust rust & rust. Check my build thread if you like photos of rust. I'd rather gradually improve the spec of a clean one to suit my wants than spend a million hours welding up a(nother) rusty one, especially if you plan to start using it straight away.

As mentioned above rust will be the decider in which you go for. My preference would be for the 300-24, simply because it's a nicer car and by far the more reliable of the pair.
Jacking points and sills are prone to rust if not treated, but the important one everyone forgets is the rear subframe mounts. If those are rotten the subframe has to come out to repair them, a very time consuming job.
The 300-24 has old skool ke-jetronic fuel injection and is very reliable, however parts are getting harder to find for it. The big money item on one of these is the ignition control module (EZL module), they are no longer available which has driven up prices to around £1k. The wiring loom on these is not a problem, they are before the bio degradable rubbish. The power band on these engines is not like the others in that it is very high up the revs, and can feel a little flat at low revs.
The 220 is efi so better on fuel, but it has more to go wrong. It is also one of the cars where the wiring looms give trouble, if you can see bare copper anywhere on the engine harness walk away. The later the car the more likely it will have rust, they switched to water based paint in the later cars which did them no favors. The m111 engine can also eat headgaskets, so check for signs of overheating.

Thanks Chaps, some great food for thought
As HC says, this was my gut feeling too, buy the best then improve the other bits, the 24v one just doesn't sit right in the advert or the convo I've had with the guy, feels very 'wanna off load this' and tbf it's cheap so why hasn't the usual MB fanatic snapped it up being mega rare?
@carat please show my more on your superturbo diesel one? is it a DPUK one

Thanks Chaps, some great food for thought. @carat please show my more on your superturbo diesel one? is it a DPUK one Not a Dpuk car but a rolling project I started 10 years ago. Used to have a 300 petrol with an auto gearbox, now has the om606 with a 6 speed manual. I actually use it as a daily driver, keep it off boost and you can see 40mpg out of it.

Big fan of W124s and had a 300TD estate back in the day.
Ultimately try both and see which feels best to you.
Nothing wrong with either and if they were the only two in the world I would buy on condition above all. I'm actually a fan of the cloth seats over leather but it's what you prefer.
The place that serviced my 300TD used to lend me a tired looking but solid 220 saloon as a loan car. I found the 4 cylinder much happier in the twisties but maybe it was sportline suspension. It was, thinking about it, 15 odd years ago.
