This is one of my favourite events on the show calendar. It isn't really all that big, think of it as a large car park, because that is where it is held. My favourite thing about it is the style and mix of cars. There are modern things that don't look out of place, and whilst there is a whole shakotan style kinda throughout, it is more sprinkled with that Mooneyes flavour than a traditional Kyusha classic event in Japan (like the old Nakayoshi Hot Olds meet and such like).
Handily Mooneyes themselves have a great write up and photo gallery from the event each year www.mooneyes.co.jp/aon2023_report/ so if you want to skip my curation you can just dive straight into that.
Let's start with some atmosphere
Before we get to the meat and bones of the retro/classic stuff that is present I'd like to highlight a few of the more modern cars that caught my eye. Some of these are are in bargain basement territory compared to a lot of retro stuff, so are ideal to be having a bit of fun with.
This Nissan NV200 (I think) is the current Mooneyes van, there are a few companies in Japan doing bolt on cool parts for them, including Mooneyes themselves. They seem to have their own little scene.
This generation of Suzuki Wagon R is definitely better looking than the second generation, that we got at the Vauxhall Agila. However broadly speaking similar good times could be had with a bit of thinking and the right bits
Honda CR-V with some overlanding styling stood out too
Mooneyes style Kei cars are always a fixture at these events, a great way to have some cheap-ish fun that you can keep adding to and modding each year to keep it fresh
Okay let's get some classics in here before I leave you to browse the galleries yourself (and watch the bonus video at the bottom)
There are loads more good things in the event coverage at Mooneyes www.mooneyes.co.jp/aon2023_report/
And a video to enjoy
In fact two (although this one made me seasick)
