cant seam to figure this out,
temp gauge reads really high from cold and very soon after starting goes fully up
tried a new sender = same
tried spare cluster= same
tested wiring 12v, ground and sender wire all have continuity and insulated from each other
BUT, if i test the cluster out of the car on the bench with only the temp connected it reads fine?

Maybe replace the sensor and change the coolant see what happens?

new or old sensor does the same , coolant already changed, reads high when car is stone cold
wondered if alternator rectifier issue would cause glitches?

Hi, It sounds like it's picking up an earth between the gauge and the sender, so look for damage to the loom or evidence of melted insulation on its route from gauge to sender.

thanks colin but i have run a new wire direct from sender to gauge with the same result

Sounds like it might be the wrong sensor for the gauge. What happens to the gauge if you disconnect the sensor ?

Have you got a set of gauges or a different water temp gauge you could try?

gauge reads zero when disconnected from sensor, tried a spare gauge but the same , can only think both gauges are faulty?
but why would they work when off the car?

What happens to the gauge if you disconnect the wire at the sensor ? If it goes to zero, try earthing the wire and see what the gauge does

disconnected it goes to zero, earthed it goes full

That would indicate the gauge and wiring are ok and your problem is the sensor
|
