For sale is my 1987 Volvo 340 1.7 GLE
I bought this a few months ago as a useable summer classic. I have enough projects and vehicles off the road so it was nice to buy something fun and interesting I could use.
79K Miles
MOT Until May 2024
This is the third Volvo 340 I've owned and i have a strange love for them, they're quite entertaining to own and drive.
If this doesn't sell I have no problem holding onto it and using it.
A car designed by DAF, built in the Netherlands with a Renault Engine and a Volvo badge what's not to love!
They're light RWD Cars with the Gearbox and diff mated at the back of the car to give even weight distribution.
It was previously bought buy a father and son who dragged it out of wherever it was sat and did the work to get it MOT ready and back on the road.
I have put some miles on it over the past few months including some classic car shows and very much enjoyed it. I run it into work once a week (40 mile round trip) and it has been faultless.
I have another project which now requires some money putting into it so it's time to let this Volvo go to it's next owner to fund my restoration.
It's the GLE Model and has some awesome optional extra's for an 80's car.
Electric Windows
Heated Seats
Power steering
Fancy spoiler
Only advisories on last MOT were front Valence corrosion (Not structural, its a front spoiler essentially) and an oil leak.
It's not used any oil in my ownership so i would hazard a guess the 'oil leak' is just years of build up on the engine from a previous leak that's been sorted.
It's far from perfect, it's a 36 year old car that's been used.
I'll start with the bad points (Note, i have been as honest as i can here, it's far from perfect and would benefit from some love but is in a good useable condition)
Front end suspension etc is a bit tired, the torque rods probably need replacing or looking at as they are slightly loose. Front camber is excessive and likely needs new bearings in the strut tops.
You can feel a rumble/vibration through the steering when turning left at speed, either a bush in the steering is worn or it's the suspension itself.
Rear shocks have been replaced with non OEM shocks at some point and they are far too firm for the rear, it's crashy and needs new shocks.
Exhaust is some sort of combination of stuff welded together with a silencer, sounds and looks standard but it's not, i think it's hard to find an OEM 1.7 Backbox now.
Paintwork is far from perfect and you can see where certain parts have been touched up/repaired in the past.
Small bit of rust in the O/S Rear door. Nothing major and could be patched easily.
One wheel trim is missing, annoyingly hard to find one so probably better off replacing with a set of alloys from a 360.
Passengers side electric window works sometimes? If it doesn't work you give the motor a tap and it will.
No central locking or sunroof, my previous 340's had this but i guess it was either an optional extra or for the GLT model.
Wiper stalk is loose but works, i have a spare i will get around to fitting when i have time.
The bad points probably make it sound worse than it is, i am overly critical for something that's this old and has been used.
Engine runs lovely, always starts and warms up nicely, idles and drives great. They have common issues with the RENIX carbs and were often swapped to more available Webbers that weren't as nice. This has the original RENIX carb and it's set up lovely.
I've put 500+ miles on it with no issues at all and it always gathers a small crowd/people love seeing them.
Prior to me buying it the following was done:
Full service, fluids and filters
New dizzy
New Lower front ball joints
Welding where required
Rear shocks (As mentioned above not the correct shocks)
Overall it's a very good example of a running driving classic that can be enjoyed and just tinkered with as and when.
I'd really like it to go to somebody who will use it, and look after it. Too many of these were lost to people trying to drift them or abusing them.
You could also tastefully modify it, there is a company called Classicsweede run by a guy up in Wales who still supports the aftermarket scene for them and is a fantastic resource.
Engine options if you wanted more power you can bolt in the old 1.8/2.0 F7R/F7P engine from the old Clio Williams or Megane Coupe.
The 1.7 Turbo engine from the Volvo 340 also is a direct fit!
They're great little cars and can be huge fun. They're getting much less common now and so many are scrapped or broken for parts which is a real shame.
I'm asking £650 on eBay now, £1500 to anyone on here - Which is what i paid for it.
Car is located in Calne, Wiltshire. SN11.
It's taxed/insured and I'm using it occasionally so more than happy to take any prospective buyer for a drive or you are more than welcome to drive with proof of insurance.
Any questions please don't hesitate to contact me.
