American law used to regulate American headlamp design โ which is why they stuck with sealed beams decades after Europe went halogen, why cars, trucks, vans and even big trucks had one of a few choices of round or rectangular headlights. And why you would see European cars in the USA with strange double headlamsp in plastic surrounds rather than the big single lamps they had everywhere else.
They also used to have to kick up a percentage of light to illuminate overhead freeway signs โ the ones you still see in places with reflective studs in letters โ the ones Europe threw in the bin last century. So driving in fog or falling snow was a real pain in the bum โ you just see a vertical curtain of light โ looks cool from outside, terrible when you actually want to see where you are going.
Only relatively recently have they relented โ the last 15/20 yrs ?
On the good side โ any car parts place, supermarket etc would have almost certainly have a spare headlamp for your car on the shelf as there were so few options.

"crotch" vent - I rented a Malibu in early 2000's when working in and around LA for a few months - couldn't initially work out why my knackers were getting chilled . . .

The 4.3 is a nice "lightweight" engine, it likes to rev but does run out of breath toward the upper end of the range. They do turbocharge really well. The first gen dash is nicer to look at but the second gen came with crotch vent. Hard to decide, form over function... Also, BBQ trumps car work every time. Nothing to feel guilty about. I am stuck with the dash I got, air on not working, but a conversion kit came with the van, in order to convert it to modern gas etc. I will not be fitting it, someone who really wants a working air on next, can fit it to the van. I never, if ever drive anything to the red line, simply because thats how my head works. But it certainly is a willing runner in the S10.

If anything, the drivers side main beam lamp is dead. So possibly time to look at at least upgraded bulbs for it. But I am not taking the van apart and rebuilding anything that works just fine.

IIRC all the Westmoreland front mk2 Golf Scenesters used to use Bedford Rascal headlights as they fitted in the hole and were obviously RHD. They're probably about ยฃ1.75 each from your local motor factor's.

Seems Someone used an angry badger to enlarge the radio hole. Fitted is a unit I want to remove as I do not understand it, and also the bottom of this dash surround has been cut. I will be in the USA soon, with a very large case. And scrap yards are always included in my road trips. But I was wondering if anyone knew someone who was stripping a Mk1 van, this one is a 1990 short panelvan Astro. Any pointers are much appreciated. .

That is a load of work done. Next generation. Not one I would want to own now I have this one. Needs more than a bit of work it seems, to get it looking and working right. Thanks Glenn, I have messaged a guy who was breaking one in January. You never know.

RIGHT NEXT SMALL JOB, WITH A BIT OF RISK, THAT BUGGED ME FROM THE DAY I COLLECTED THE VAN, WAS THE DOORS. Sorry, caps lock. After all the years the van has been on the road, the fabric used is actually incredibly well preserved. But it is grubby, more so to the naked eye, than the camera lens. So I decided to use some fabric and carpet cleaner, along with a nail scrubbing brush, at the risk of messing it all up. Before. Dirty, dull. After. Graphics, faded and dusty. After, certainly much better. Another job, one I usually do the day I wash a new car, is to clean the interior surfaces, knobs, stalks, controls and all grooves with an ammonia based cleaner like Jif/Cif/Handy Andy whatever, and then using some form of plastic or leather or even wax based wood polish. This time it was Auto Glym, because I have bottle I bought previously. Result is a distinct improvement. VIDEO That is where we are up to today. A cleaner van.

whatโs going on here ๐ฌ bit of modern art? I have to say (again,) this van is beautiful but, IMO, the "modern art" referred to looks to me more like kids graffiti, Nigel

A cleaner van. With the standard of the rest of the van, it seems strange to me that the dash hasn't been re trimmed, not even a dash mat! Some two tone grey fabric, or maybe alcantara Ttfn Glenn

I wonder if that kind of glove box lid "art work" style was outside, too, back when the van was yellow?
