I've got an old Myford lathe that was my dads, he was given it by one of his brothers many years ago (before I was born so probably 1970's or earlier) and as far as i'm aware its never run properly in the time he had it.
We did try to get it going when I was little but we didn't have the right belt.
Does anyone know anything about Myford lathes and can help identify which model it is? It looks different to all the ones I've seen in pictures but I think thats just because they made changes to them throughout their life.
It also has this spindle drive that matches the lathe and a motor that bolts to this, the bearings on the spindle have a lot of play and i'm not sure what can be done with them. There is nut on each side but I assume its not as simple as just tightening them up.
The motor is the one that dad had for it but clearly its not the right one as the pulley needs to change, there is also a flat pulley for it (not pictured) that I assume would fit. This is the motor, is it big enough for the job?
Anyone have any idea what model it is and where I can get bits for it? Once its running I would like a three door chuch for it and I don't have any tools for it but first thing is to get it running. Any advice welcome :-)

Have you looked on lathes.co.uk? It has loads of info on there for even the most obscure lathes and Myford are probably one of the most popular out there so bound to be something on yours.
When you know what size tooling you need just buy a set of carbide cutting tools on eBay. They’re pretty cheap and very good for home use. I use mine regularly and yet to wear any of them out.

Thanks, those are for the ML7/10, I think mine is an earlier ML 1-4 but I couldn't find any numbers on it to identify it. I was told by my dad it was last used durin ww2 to cut things for tank manufacturer but whether that's true of just a story passed along with the lathe is anyone's guess 😃

Thanks will take a look, once I've got it running I'm hoping to do small bits and pieces on it.

Sorry, just had a glance on my phone and thought stripped down ML7, I can see it's different now with a flat belt setup etc. There is a very active Myford group on Facebook and lots of Myford 'nerds' about. Be interested to see what you find out. Tom

I've been told that it's a Myford MF precision 4" lathe rather than an ML series.
I don't know what the difference means in practical terms though.
Will get it going and see how well it works for what I want to do 😃
