New project. Marketplace bargain of an autograss buggy rolling frame. Previously fitted with a Vauxhall red top. Empty space, but not empty enough. An afternoon with the grinder Which has tidied it up a bit. More soon.

Next job is to decide on an engine and how to fit it. Most of these buggys have a bike engine and are fitted behind the axle. As this had a car ( vauxhall red top ) , engine it was in front of the axle. The bike engined versions are very light on the front end and usually have ballast to help keep them down. So I am going to use a bike engine, but in front of the axle. Not unique but certainly not common. Auto X buddy had a Honda CBR 600 cheap so have bagged that. Another Auto X buddy had some Honda Blackbird 1000cc engines, so I have all of those as well. CBR is complete apart from exhaust. Blackbirds need a bit of building, should get 4 runners out of 6 engines. Also needs exhaust, which I have tried to buy twice from ebay. First one the courier lost, second, the seller couldnt find it. Anyway a trial fit of an empty blackbird to see what is what. Have a plan of how to fit. Started cutting bits. More soon.

Put all the big bits in the frame and lined up the sprockets. Worked out where the bottom of the “post” could go without interfering with anything else. Nothing about this frame is square or level, so this first bit will control where all the other bits go. So made a bit Which will go here Like this Next will be get it all built up again to get the top position.

How are you going to do the transmission? Chain drive to a solid axle?

How are you going to do the transmission? Chain drive to a solid axle? Yes exactly that. Some of the more fancy ones have a big aluminium box with a chain inside driven off a gear which fits over the engine sprocket. I sort of thought about a Quaife limited slip diff but it would cost more than all the rest of it. The axle on mine is quite a horrible thing that is all welded up and not very true in any direction.

How well do they corner - obviously you aren't going to be short of power to spin a wheel anyway but I've done some counter intuitive (to a motorcycle rider anyway) bodyweight shifting on quads to get them to turn better by lifting a rear wheel.
Hope to see a video of it being put through its paces before to long!

Power slide seems to be the way to do it. So not too grippy tyres, which is where I went wrong with the Honda v6 powered Pugeot 205. Whether or not I have the skills to do it remains to be seen. Would still like to try a torque biasing diff though.

Well it nearly worked. Built it up But this bump will not allow the engine to go to the right enough. Had hoped to get away with it, needed about 8mm more. So cut a bit out and cut another bit to go back. Welded in and tidied up. Now misses the bump. Next is finish welding the arms now that position is final. Then work out support for front of engine.

Finally managed to buy an exhaust. Was about to leave great feedback as it had turned up super quick, 18 hours after buying. Then the next one appeared. First one is the one that the couriers had lost. Second one is the one I bought last. Interestingly it looks like it is the same port spacing as a random exhaust I have and also a 600 Honda engine. So able to swap down pipes between different engines looks possible.

Added a stiffener to the back of the post, lot of holes in so other bits can be mounted to it. Coat of epoxy primer to keep the rust away. Hopefully this will actually stick to the metal, I have never had much luck with paint. Seems to scrape off very easily, metal too polished So, engine front mounts next. Which go together like this Next is join them all together

Little bit of progress, been side tracked with other jobs. Front mounts finished and a coat of epoxy primer. One bit screws into the engine, other goes through a plain hole. Next up will be exhaust I think.

Hi all, long time since the last post. Have done my usual stint of farm work and now back to winter hours. So get a Tuesday, Thursday and every other weekend off. Some progress has been made over the summer though. So it was exhaust where we left off. Cut the end off the Honda front pipe Chop up a Touareg v10 exhaust for bits. Weld some of the bits together. Was a bit annoying that there was only one right angled bit to use. Add a silencer and it is done. Will make a support for it next. Radiator next I think.
