1993 Volvo 240 Torslanda Turbo - K426 JRR
Four previous owners, owned by previous owner last 15 years. Indicated mileage, as of yesterday’s MOT - 132,713 miles, actual mileage I’d estimate at nearer 114,000 miles (see explanation below). Used in its original standard form for a few years after I bought it in 2008, before being turbocharged using a low mileage (77,000 miles) engine and gearbox from a 1997 Volvo 940 that I bought as a donor vehicle - P878 NRK. I have history for both the 240 and 940.
The car has a slightly erratic idle, I've checked everything I can think of, and substituted multiple parts to try and fix it, but it persists. The latest thought is it may be because the TTV flywheel/clutch assembly is much lighter than the original, but I no longer have the original parts so cannot refit them to check. I think an increase in idle speed would help, but this is controlled by the ecu and cannot be altered, perhaps ecu chips can be obtained with the speed increased, I'm not sure? It's not a massive issue, it drives fine off idle and it never stalls, but it's there nonetheless. Maybe just a fresh pair of eyes is needed? No doubt someone cleverer than me can sort it.
Converted by previous owner as a bit of a toy, he put the 240 on the road in turbo form in 2015 and as a second car it got used regularly, but not exclusively, for the next couple of years. Shortly after the turbo conversion the odometer stopped working, around the 104,000 mile mark, but with the speedo still functioning I didn’t get round to looking at the issue while I was still using the car. I started a house renovation project in early 2016 and the 240 proved incredibly useful, but as the house increasingly took my time and interest I decided I couldn’t justify running two cars and it made sense to get a more economical parts hauler so I bought a V70 D5, sold my daily driver and parked the 240 up. Unable to identify the problem with the odometer I obtained a complete replacement dash cluster reading 132660 miles. It can be seen from the mot history before the turbo conversion, that I was averaging around 9000 miles per year, as a second car I estimate my mileage was probably half this and I added only around 10,000 miles in those two years, so the correct mileage will be nearer 114,000 rather than the 132,000 indicated. Consequently the engine will only have around 87,000 miles on it. I still have the original 240 dash cluster, which will come with the car.
It's had a recent oil and filter change, and new air filter, replaced all 4 shock absorbers, fitted new suspension bushes throughout, and new arb drop links. I've replaced a seized rear brake calliper with a good used one, fitted new rear brake backplates, new rear pads and new handbrake shoes. New rear wheel bearings. A replacement wiper motor has also been fitted.
never upped the boost from the standard low pressure 940 setting, so I've never exploited the full potential of the conversion, but 250hp should be a realistic figure with the mods it has. A manual boost controller, that I never got round to fitting, will come with the car.
So, low-ish miles and in very good condition, no rot. Cosmetically very tidy. There are a few marks here and there, as you would expect for a car of its age, and I've touched in the paint on stone chips and the like. The bonnet is easily the worst area, in particular a section about 6 inches long where the top layer of paint has come off (see picture), but the rest of the paint is mostly in great condition. The photos show the upper bumper trims are missing, I never got round to refitting them, but it does mean you can see the rear lip, often rotten hidden underneath the bumper trim, is intact. I do have the bumper trims, and they will come with the car. I also removed the horrid plastic cladding from the door bottoms, I was going to add an extra stripe with some wide trim tape to fill in the space and hide the holes, but that's something else I never got around to. I did buy some tape though, and this will also come with the car.
An impending move to a house with a much smaller drive means a reality check is now in order and it's time to sell. The mileage will increase a little as I will be driving it around a bit just to make sure everything is ok. Quite a few spares will be included with the car.
I recommend anyone interested come and view.
Engine
Standard Volvo 940 B230FK low pressure turbo block, new seals and gaskets, Volvo 740 '531' cylinder head with larger exhaust valves and mildly gas flowed by Andy at Cylinder Head Developments. Volvo 'A' cam. Ported exhaust manifold with 16T turbocharger. Very expensive JP Exhausts stainless custom exhaust with 3" downpipe into 2.5" system with sports cat. Airtec RS500 intercooler. Wasted spark ignition with Magnecor leads. Fuel and ignition ecu chips. Provent oil separator (not fitted at present but will come with the car). Mocal remote oil filter. BMW e28 oil cooler. Uprated fuel pump, Volvo 940 electric cooling fan and alternator. Custom air filter box with cold air feed.
Transmission
Volvo 940 M90L2 gearbox. TTV flywheel. Volvo 850R clutch. BMW e34 M5 propshaft coupling. Volvo 940 type propshaft centre bearing. 'Craving boost' short shift gear lever.
Suspension/steering
Spax lowering springs. Bilstein B4 shock absorbers. IPD anti roll bars. Kaplhenke roll correction spacers. Slightly shortened trailing arms (to centre rear wheels in the arches). Threaded adjusters added to rear control arms and panhard rod.
Brakes
Mazda RX7 front callipers on Yoshifab brackets, Volvo 940 front discs.
Wheels
Modified Peugeot 17" steel wheels. The wheels are not banded, so no chance of leaks, instead the centres have been released, and rewelded further in for the front wheels. The rears have the centres reversed, putting the dish on the outside.
Misc
Load liner, load cover and dog guard. Clear front/rear lamp units. Black painted headlamp buckets. Trim tape from door tops removed. Lower plastic door/sill trim removed. Earlier model rear valance panel and door mirrors. Peugeot roof aerial. Original blue interior trim replaced with grey/black. Rover 800 Vitesse Recaro front seats (slight damage on driver's bolster). Momo steering wheel. VDO Oil temp, pressure and boost gauges. AEM wideband gauge. Pioneer radio/Cd player. I also have a pair of unbroken and reinforced front door pockets, also LOTS of spares
