You may or may not have seen I've just picked up an XJ40 My ultimate goal is to have it on air ride with the ability to slam it in to the weeds whenever I fancy, but keeping it riding like a Jaaaag. I'm hoping that this is the experience with air ride? The name suggests it rides well - however, my X351 didn't ride like a Jaaaag and that had factory air suspension. Anyone have any pearls of wisdom on this subject? The other thing I'd like to say is it needs to be on a shoestring budget. I'll be doing everything myself but if I could have some pointers in the right direction of the cheapest way of achieving this goal, I'd be a happy chap.

I don't know much about Jaaaags, but in general, fit the biggest bags you can squeeze in (without rubbing on anything). Small bags = high air pressure to lift the car = hard ride. Big bags = lower air pressure to lift the car = softer ride.

Great - this is just the sort of information I need. Thank you!

You used to daily a car so low it grounded on road camber though... HC: "Tell me where the bumps are yeah" MLT: "Sure" *BANG* HC: "Why didn't you tell me about that one?" MLT: "That wasn't a bump"

Jag front ends are actually pretty cr4p to bag. I speak from first hand experience.
You won’t get super plush ride quality as the biggest bag you can do is 6”. and that’s only if it’s non ballooning. You’re basically tied to slam specialities ss6 bags, you can’t use Firestone 2500s or any of the clones. This means quite high lift pressure, and as Andy says that means they can be a bit bouncy. This was a jag clip on a shoebox with a sbc/th350 in it, so I reckon the weight would be the same or slightly less than a stock xj40.
You then have to relocate the shocks a looong way out the way.
Oh yeah and the subframes are plastic coated inside and out so are utterly horrible to weld.
I’m not saying don’t do it, but it won’t be quick, easy, or ride that well afterwards.

Well, I can't say that's particularly encouraging Dez but it's good to know.

Dez why are you tied to Slam Specialities SS6 bags? The whole world of air ride is new to me so I'm trying to figure it all out. My old Lincoln had factory bags at the back and that was incredible comfortable - was that down to the size of the bags I take it? There are various kits available here and there - ranging from 300 quid for an entire air ride kit on eBay (too weak for a heavy Jag/poor quality?) to multiple thousands!

Slam specialities bags are the only non ballooning double convolute bags. As in they don’t get any bigger when under pressure like dominators or firestones do.
The cheap double convoluted expand hugely under pressure, you need a lot of clearance round them, which isn’t attainable on the jag arms. You can fit the slam specialties with 1/4” of clearance and they’ll still have 1/4” clearance at 150psi. Either that or you’ve got to hack huge chunks out of the spring cups and remake the arms.
Take all the stanceworks posey photos you see with a pinch of salt. Most of the cars on there are terribly built, and would be illegal as f-k over here. I was shocked at a lot of the stuff they were bigging each other up on when I was researching doing my w115. Massive holes hacked out of crucial components, eat through bags as a disposable item, and don’t have any shocks so will ride like a pogo stick. But hey they look good in some pics for the interwebs.
I’ll dig out some pics of the install I did to show you how marginal clearances on a jag front end are.

don't have any experience of air ride, but have some experience of pneumatics, if there is limited space for the bags, might it be possible to connect to a large reservoir tank, to give a larger volume to absorb the shocks, also use large bore hose to permit the air to flow unrestricted Probably talking absolute carp, but possibly may be of help Ttfn Glenn

Hey Dez did you manage to find any pics of your old Jag setup? I'm assuming that the SSR bag setup would still ride better than lowering springs? I've found a few different lowering spring sets for sale - 30mm seems to be most popular. Really want to drop my XJ40 on air though

Would softer springs and air assist dampers be an option?

Yeah I see what you mean - that really is tight. Imagine designing a car that looks so awesome slammed and then making it hard to bag I may have to go down the static route but it doesn't really comply with my want for the perfect daily (perfect for me that is)

The grey jag with plate delete on single puece breytons was mine. Track it down and buy it as it would be cheaper. I sold it for £6.5k Kevin johns at mrm makes the metal work. Rear shocks are cut with plates welded to them. Buy new shocks.
