So I've got two rusty CVH engines sitting around for an upcoming project and they need cleaning... A lot of cleaning. So I'm building a vapour blasting cabinet. For anyone that doesn't know what that is; it's a sand blaster with water added into the mix and give a much nicer surface finish. Seriously, these things make parts so shiny and clean, they look lovely. I've been planning this one for a long time and to me, the number one option as a base for it is a Switzler enclosed parts washer, which is basically an already water tight sand blasting cabinet. Other people have used sand basters and a load of silicone but this comes with more of the parts you need. They look like this: However they're £400+ and I'm a cheepskate so I bided my time and recently I found one second hand for £100. It arrived last week (thank you Shipley). It's an utter dirtbox so fist job is cleaning. A couple of hours on the outside had it looking like this: So, once the cleaning is done I need to strip out some bits, get a suitable container for the water and sand mix, a pump and some parts to make a gun. But for now, I'm dead chuffed with my latest toy, even if it is filthy fecking dirty!

Did a little more on this tonight, made a new screen for it on the laser cutter, with a little health and safety warning: Then got down 'n' dirty, there are little upside down u channel sections around the outside that hold the grate in place. They're a really rubbish design, and have trapped grime and water for years so it's gone a bit rusty under there. It looked like this before I scraped it all out: Next up I'll finish cleaning it all up, grind out the rusty bits and slather every joint in seam sealer.

So what will you use for a pump? I remember a freind of mine making his own years ago but can't remember what pump he had.

So what will you use for a pump? I remember a freind of mine making his own years ago but can't remember what pump he had. It'll be a dirty water sump pump, there'll be a big water container under the machine and the pump will have two outlets. One to feed the gun and another to agitate the water / glass beed mix.

Little update on this, found a bit of time to strip the paint off the lid with one of those carborundum wheels, worked a treat!

This is kinda vapor blaster adjacent... When vapor blasting you need to start with a clean oil free part, so I bought a parts washer. Never used one before and I LOVE it! Gonna be so nice for working in the car! Got this vice for the mill the other day and gave it the spa treatment. Came up really nicely, so gonna give it a lick'o'paint in the next few days.

PS if anyone has any recommendations for water based parts washer fluid, let me know I'm just using a screwfix no nonsense de greaser at the mo and it works but I have no idea if it could be better.

Interesting project. What kind of compressor is necessary for this kind of blasting? Pressure, tank volume, ...?

So to compliment the vapor blaster, and because I can't say not to rusty old toot... I bought a sand blaster.... Looked like this: It's had a bit of a hard life in a commercial garage. Someone had badly pop riveted a bit of chequer plate over the original arm holes. Guessing this was because they couldn't find gloves with big enough sleeves to fit the holes. Neither could I, so I designed some new sleeves in solidwroks, cut them on the laser and sewed them together with an over locker. Then sewed the nice new sleeves to the skanky old gloves that came with the sand blaster. Now I can use the sand blaster to clean the vapor blasting cabinet parts and finally get around to assembling it.
