Hello all, Wanted to introduce myself, in Johnathan or JB. I have taken on a 340 project. It’s quite a cool story. Probably 15 years ago, I drove this car. It was my mates, I had an R32 skyline gtst at the time. I loved it!! It had no power, it was like a boat but something about it I fell in love with. We used to call it the Swedish AE86 (given our drift love hence the connection) The car has now been sat for 11 years. It is however solid it appears. And so I have agreed to take the 340 from my mate to build it up. He didn’t want to just stare at it anymore 😭 So, my aim is to finish this season of rallycross (funds permitting) in the Saxo vts, and then I shall start the Volvo. Initial ideas, B230 turbo engine. At first, I thought to just install 360 running gear but now I’m looking at an m90 gearbox with a 740 rear axle and suspension. I am certainly open to options so if anyone has any suggestions I will happily look into them. The budget is not limitless however and I will be doing a lot of the work myself, potentially some of the fabrication will have to be sent out. It will be a huge project for me so it will take some time. At the end of it, I may not want to race the car but we shall see. But I can’t wait. I have a YouTube channel called The Road Hunters for anyone who wants to follow along in the future youtube.com/@roadhuntersmotorsportAnd I will aim to blog it up on here over time. Hope to speak to you all and see you about.

This will be a cool build. Gearbox in the back & DeDion, right? I'd definitely keep that ( maybe upgrade it with Alfetta, Porsche, or Chevy parts for strength, if needed) But 4 link it with a Watts or Panhard, and all that good stuff...

Alfa V6 and transaxle adapted to fit would be my choice.

They are some great options and I will look into them.
I currently rallycross so I had thought rallycross and drift, and initial thoughts were to move the gearbox due to not coming up with any decent alternatives, however, I will have a look into them options as I would prefer not to cut it to move the gearbox as the weight distribution and it potentially means a rally possibility.

Another driveline option is 944 trans-axle -- these have been mated up to those 1.8T VAG engines now 20v 1.8t into 924/944

These have the diff in the front instead of in the back of the gearbox/transaxle like a Alfa/928/Volvo 340/360. There was at least one type of 924 gearbox (five-speed) with the whole differential housing in the back, Alfa 116-style. May it was the one used mostly in the 924 Turbo? 944s reverted to the Audi type.

The 928 has that style. All 924's and 944's I have seen have the Audi gearbox. We have a few of both on my work.

You know more about 924s and 944s than I ever will. I sincerely wish I had that kind of expertise! There was a 5-speed, dog-leg, Porsche-designed gearbox (G31) used mostly in the 924 Turbo (and, perhaps, some non-turbo 924s with an optional 5-speed as well). It seems this transaxle, nicknamed "snail diff housing gearbox" was basically a 911 gearbox adapted by Porsche to the original 924 setup, with two shifting rods, instead of one (as in the usual Audi types for the 924/944.) That’s really interesting about the Audi gearbox’s!
So I’ve been doing some planning. I am aiming to race at Lydden Hill this year, then it’s time to start the Volvo. I may have to sell the saxo due to space, potentially I could keep the saxo for cheap rallyx but I may sell and utilise the volvo all round.
Idea is to initially get the car stripped down and refreshed, b230 engine in and 360 drive train. Run the car around 200bhp or just over. Get her caged etc and start use. Have a play with the bodywork.
Then next stage then will be to look at the suspension. But this time my skill of welding either needs to be high enough or we budget to send the work out and look to convert from leaf spring to either 940 suspension or 5link.
The final stage then will be to increase the power and to change the drive train to support this. So plenty of time to research the best way of doing this.
