Here for sale is my 1997 Subaru Forester ST/B STI
MOT'd till april 2024
It was imported in 2009 by one of the previous owners and then heavily messed around with, they turned it into a bit of a frankenstien by fitting a uk2000 impreza engine (which I'm told is easily mappable unlike the original) & Manual gearbox, around the same time it had the full interior from a UK spec car fitted, even as far as fitting the passanger airbag & manual heater controls.
I bought it in early 2019 with the rear suspension knocking, a big scrape down one side, various wiring issues and lowered but only at the rear, it was a bit of a mess to be honest but i'd fallen in love with it so brought it back and parked it up.
Over the course of the next year I replaced both wings and 3 of the doors, fixed the wiring issues, had a GD rear subframe and diff carrier blasted and powdercoated then sprayed with raptor paint before fitting with polybushes and a set of hardrace adjustable lateral links, rear brake pipes, whiteline lowering springs with wrx struts (i put STI pink springs on first but they were so harsh, i wanted it to be firm enough to drive hard and not bottom out on bumpy roads but soft enough to still be comfortable, i feel its a perfect compromise) I deleted the front subframe spacers so the geometry matches that of an impreza, lower arm bushes, track rod ends, 4 pot front brakes, discs & pads all round, new handbrake shoes, new wheel studs all round, full service, HT leads, cambelt and waterpump, stainless backbox from an impreza extended with altered brackets to fit, STI wheels with fresh Toyo Proxies all round.
New filler neck, rear strut brace.
I've probably missed stuff, I spent around £2.5k on bits and pieces without taking into account any panels or used parts.
Whilst doing the rear suspension work I removed the fuel tank, exhaust and propshaft and viciously attacked any even slightly crusty bits with a wire wheel on a grinder & drill, painted anything bare metal with zinc primer before undersealing everything, being an import no welding was needed and I wanted to keep it that way.
I've added some pictures of the process but bare in mind this work was done in mid 2020 and around 8000 miles ago so it's not quite as perfect as it was however i will be getting back underneath it to retouch any areas that need it.
At the time Id spent almost a year of spare time on it and had in my mind that I'd be getting it on the road for a year or so and then returning for round 2 which was supposed to be uprated anti roll bars front and rear, alloy front control arms, quick ratio steering rack (I do have the column from a GD in my garage waiting for the rack, along with a front strut brace) and then ideas for a ej207 and 6 speed swap later down the line again along with some bodywork.
Unfortunately, around 700 miles after getting it mot'd (and ordering the entire original bodykit which had parts arrive from Russia, Canada and Kazakhstan costing £500+)
I was driving home from my friends house one evening and some muppet in a Picasso forgot how roundabouts worked and side swiped me, it ruined the 2 passanger doors but that was enough to make it a cat N, I replaced the doors (twice, the first set i found were very rough) and got it re-mot'd and now you can't tell anything has happened at all. ( i do have the accident pictures if anyone wishes to see them)
I used it as a daily for about a year and a half, up until e10 fuel came in and everybody started to panic buy Vpower which then shot up to £2.20 a litre near me, so I bought an old diesel skoda to smoke around in and just used the Scoob at weekends.
At this point i became a home owner, bought a dog and then the MOT ran out last summer so it has sat being occasionally washed and started with me fully intending to go back and continue doing the things i had planned.
Ultimately my priorities have changed and it's taken me until now to realise that i'm not going to be able to throw the time and funds at it to continue making it what I had imagined, that and it won't get used enough to warrant keeping it on the road, hence it's up for sale.
Whilst it was parked up I had the genuine STI bodykit (which was a factory option at this time) painted and fitted.
Only bad bits to speak of, the bodywork is tatty in places If you look too closely, the paint is marked above the doors where it had wind deflectors fitted, some paint is flaking on the bumpers and the bonnet has markings from being sign written,
The rear diff is rumbling which i never realised before doing the initial work, it didn't get any louder in the 8k miles i've done in it though although it's only been used fairly locally, I have a replacement sat in a box which can come with the car.
The drivers seat has a worn bolster and the interior could do with a good clean, it's not awful but it did ferry my dog around occasionaly so theres likely to be some fluff in some gaps here and there. It also only has one key.
I really don't want to sell this, It was my sole focus for a year of my life and it probably owes me around £6k at this point which i realise i'm not going to get but it needs to go to someone who will use it, enjoy it and hopefully contine the project i started.
