Seeing as I am also brining this to RRW in a few weeks I thought I would also copy across its build thread from another forum, hopefully the pics are hosted better for this but we shall see what I can salvage. The golf came to my ownership as I was still putting my mini back together but was too good to say no to, had to wait it turn mostly though. Some time mid 2015 So i thought it was about time to get a build thread going for this. It was destined for the scrappy with its only fault being a faulty clutch, the bodywork is very very solid! At this point my mate stepped in and saved it. It sat at his work and then at his for ages and no progress was really made, he had his Montana green GTD and various other cars and never got round to getting this going. Thats where I step in and very little persuasion and it was mine I needed another project as my mini was nearing completion. Here are a few pics he sent me before I got it. It came with a replacement good condition tornado red door as the drivers front had some surface bubbling. It was storing various things! He had starting polishing up the side he could easily get to and was coming up rather well. Chopper not included unfortunately A mere 195k Tornado pink in full effect on the other side, I can't wait to get me DA out Very tidy interior and free meerkat Some dismantling had started Once emptied and one side polished look rather good although has slightly faded again since with no protection on it Plenty more to come

The minis return did not slow down parts purchasing though so stuff was gradually arriving. Coilovers 16v rears Nice delivery from Heko Found the front driver badge in the car broken, glued it up and got it attached At this point it was crunch time for the mini. Got it all built up and ready just before London to Brighton mini run, sailed threw the MOT and pulled 90bhp on the rollers before a distributor problem detonated a piston. While I sulked and set about sourcing engine parts for that I got stuck into the golf and pulled bits off it to be cleaned up at home. Evicting this guy in the process

So recently I panicked realising I wanted the mk2 on the road sooner rather than later and with the mini still in bits I went and ripped its face off. That left this mess Plenty to clean up, paint, and/or replace so the daily was loaded up All the bits taken home and after a quick pressure washing looked a bit better Had a nice delivery from vw spares and some tyres for the daily! During the week I painted plenty of the bits including the front panel satin black which dried much less shiny than it looks here

Got my heritage spots in the grille last night. Will look a lot better once tinted Last night I replaced all of the many vacuum pipes on the pooburg carb in an attempt to get it to work! Will get it bolted back on Saturday and pick up a new battery and a few other bits before then and hopefully get it to run this weekend.

Sooo she ran for 30 seconds or so! Which is a great deal more than it has in the last 5 years but not quite enough to transport me anywhere useful! She would only run on whatever fuel I poured into the carb and then stop. Even after I eventually got the fuel bled through from the tank I had the same problem. So I disconnected the fuel return and caught some in a cup and the problem was immediately obvious, water contaminated fuel. Being sat outside for several years without a fuel cap is bad news it seems so tank dropped and drained leaving this: Roughly 50% water so no you cannot run a golf on water! So now it wasn't going to run I took the opportunity to pull the inlet manifold off to clean out and replace the coolant seal in it, which as suspected, was collapsed and the source of a small coolant leak I had. The parts have just arrived so may get it back together tonight if I can. I also got to fitting the coilovers although the front isn't finished due to deciding to paint bottom arms and other bits whilst doing them. I will clean the inner arches up art some point but the car finally has rear wheels on for the first time in ages. Hopefully running and moving about soon

So plenty has happened since my last update. Thanks rubjonny for all his advice regarding the pierburg. I am happy to say that it now runs on all cylinders and now only needs the timing tweaking and idle revs increasing (job for tonight). Perhaps the biggest update is that it's on the ground and I actually drove it around the yard several times! So for the first time in 3 years under its own steam it's moving! A car that was going to be scrapped for what turned out to be a 5 quid clutch part now lives and has gears and perhaps even more remarkably after all that time the brakes work well. Here are a few pics. VW family photo Grille also on, looking more car like Will hopefully have it at my house soon and all fingers crossed it may be on he road and MOT'ed for Edition 38

So last night I got it home we had to shuffle some cars to get it out so couldn't resist a snap of it parked near its GTD brother It wouldn't fit on the trailer so the old man came and towed it back with a towing bar. Not an enjoyable experience but it is back so can get working on it proper. I shall be locked in my garage over the bank holiday weekend in order to try and get this into an MOT'able state for next week!

I've been plodding away at this. Laid the new (to me) rear seat bases in. Look promising but the back don't fit at all so may end up finding a mk2 60/40 split rear bench and recovering it with this material. I then got carried away and did this. All stripped ready to fit bits from this big box. All black carpet and interior bits, window regulator and most importantly a Weber carb to finally get it running better and actually idling properly!

So done a fair amount on this old heap. I started to make an Alfa/VW seat baby I recieved some NOS retro Germanic speakers, a bargain job lot. At the moment I have a pair in the dash and the rear shelf supports buy will add door pockets once I have fixed my amp. I rebuilt all the heater box and fitted a new matrix Front seats completed Floorpan is nice and clean Black carpets in Heater box and blower going in Dash and front seats in Plenty of teething problems with the Weber but it made it to the gym a few times. Even found a mk3 friend. I've also dismantled the rear golf and Alfa seats ready to make some kind of Frankenstein rear bench. The final remaining issue I think is that the idle mixture is too lean so will set about fixing that tomorrow so that i can hopefully put a few miles on it over the weekend.
