With the shell solid and engine bay done, the next step was the engine. Acquired £300 MK3.5 cab on 80k Engine out, a 2.0 8v With James mainly on the body side, i cracked on with the engine Head off, replaced with a new beetle crossflow head, ported and polished, then relapped all valves, replaced one as it'd been burnt out Done! albeit has a much nicer rocker cover now as you will see later on

Into the new unit, cars coming along nicely. At this point, 90% of the wiring has been done (horrendous amount of head scratching but James's dad is an encyclopaedia on vw's) and we're waiting on carbs to arrive. Brake lines are pretty much all in, interior is all out to scrub it clean as well as the floor Mock exhaust made up now the carbs have arrived, all good to run up Fires up no issue first time, some work needed to sort out the coolant rail as at this point it's a mismatch of pipes As of this week, James has sorted the dizzy timing and coolant rail. Now at the part of ironing out all the little issues and getting the last few jobs done. We've made a new exhaust last night, got all the brake lines done, just bits like braje bleeding, a dodgey earth and sorting the gear linkage out now. A very very simplified write of of the build so far, but you get the idea Flange made for exhaust from manifold back, trying to hone in my tig skills!

Hm, several stripes of chrome trim have gone lost, like bumpers and rear window? Changed Your mind about keeping the patina (apart from the gone-with-the-steam-already) ?

Think it's the light in the pictures mate, every part that came on the car we've retained, unless it was already missing! We have also bought trims we didn't have

As i said earlier on, we ditched off the old MK3 rocker cover, for a rare MK2 Ibiza gti one. No real reason, other than they look super cool! Looking very happy under the bonnet now

I’m not gone on the dangly oil pipe look, it makes me think that whoever did it couldn’t be bothered to do it properly but I know some people like that sort of thing.
Despite that, the car looks ace.

The pipe work is changing, it's just what we had lying around at the time just to run the car up, we are having shorter pipes made so it fits better

Well, it's moved for the first time under it's own power in 23 years! New gearbox in as the original box we put in failed (never ran car beforehand so had no idea), so it's now a MK2 4 + E box, no clutch as our cable is now to short as we've had to use a different clutch, but it drives well under rev matching! borderline mot'able now, small issue to fix with the brake pedal not returning, but once the linkage is adjusted and clutch sorted, it's done!!
