Why i didn't start a thread from day 1 on this i don't know. Anyway, I was scrapping a car in May of last year, and the scrap man tipped me off about some old VW sat in a field he had been to while scrapping a car for a localish farmer. Me and a friend having been after something old and cool to build, jumped straight on it. A week later, we get in touch with the farmer and go to see it, Here's what we found! A 1981 MK1 Golf GX! Turns out this old VW had been sat in this spot since 2000, after suffering a head gasket failure. Quick inspection of the car quickly showed it was actually in quite good condition, usual rust where you'd expect on a MK1 but nowhere near as bad as expected considering it'd been sat 22 years, and on a measly 196 thousand miles. So the week after, it was coming home on a trailer. Horse box you ask? It'd been sat in a horse field, and they had used it as a scratching post / tooth brush, so it's got some pretty mega petina. Lunch over, i'll post again later if i have chance. Cheers

Back to it, with the Golf now rescued, it lived at James's house for a little while while we made some space in our old unit. First wash in forever, and it was on it's way to start a new life! (Millage pic for you) In it's new home, we quickly got onto stripping it down to a shell, as you can imagine everything that was either rubber or a fuel/brake line was well past it Original block had been left with the head off for however long, no attempt was made to rescue the block. A clear path to take was there from the start. Keep the exterior looking exactly as it looked from the day we got it, but a complete overhaul of everything underneath, under the bonnet, and a solid clean up of the interior. I'm going to break this down into a few posts, rather than just blasting every single bit of info into one post, as the cars 90-95% complete now!

With the car now down to a shell, work began on cleaning the shell and repairing the rot. Both rear arches needed repairing, along will the back of the sills and a bit of inner arch on the passenger side, as well as the fuel cap area as it has rotted out. With the rot all sorted, the floor was then undersealed and then painted body colour. Work then began on the engine bay, with a 25mm strut tower raise and smoothing of various areas. Battery tray removed, various area's tidied up, an awful lot of hours

Never had heard of strut tower raising and now the second time within a week, as if it was the 'normalst' thing in the world!

Amazing that the lights weren't broken after twenty-two years in a horse paddock.

Bookmarked. Same thing fo rme on the tower raising thing, makes sense to me, but never heard of it. Also, a GX? Never knew they made them, it looks like a "driver", but isn't a GTI? I'm confabulated!

It's all solely for good suspension travel! As it's now a very low car, it'd of been sat on bump stops had we not done this! Yeah, so the GX is almost like a run off trim level for the last MK1's, has various GTI parts but has a 1.5 carb lump!

Only the drivers fog has fell victim, so we've left that as it is! So the glass of the other side light had just fallen off, but was still useable (as can be seen in the first pics)? btw. the GX was something like the last edition mk1 with a lot of accessories. edit: ah You've mentioned that already, it was also available with the smallest engine, so nothing sporty, just comfy.

Yeah passenger lens fell off but wasn't damaged, drivers side was destroyed as is the lamp, but as the petina is so good we've left it as is! One rear light cluster hax been replaced also as was smashed

engine bay after paint! Unless you know what you're looking at, you'd think the strut towers were original. Came out so well! I can't take any credit really for the bodywork side of things as thats James's Forte. i definitely consumed a lot of P38 dust helping smooth it however lol

Was a lot of caretaking necessary regarding bonnet clearance?

Was a lot of caretaking necessary regarding bonnet clearance? We did some measuring beforehand just to be completely sure, and thankfully an inch raise had more than enough clearance
